Golf Ball Conundrum

I'm having problems finding a golf ball to stick with and would really appreciate some help. I play off a 24 handicap and my natural shape is a slice. Due to this slice problem I've been looking for a low spinning ball for a while but am never sure which one would be best for me.

As far as I can see the options are:

Bridgestone E6

Calloway Supersoft (though my swing speed is around 100 mph so would I lose distance)

Titliest Pro V1x (would this ball be effective for me?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've been wondering about this for ages and have no idea what I'm doing!

If this were a car forum, your post would roughly translate to asking whether you should choose between a sedan, a hybrid, or a sports car. These are all fine balls at what they do, but they're different. Of the 3, for what you're saying, the e6 makes a lot of sense, as it does tend to be one of the straighter balls, but you're really asking a lot of a golf ball if you want it to cure a slice. The ProV1x is low spinning in the sense that it spins less than another urethane ball like the ProV1 off of the driver when hit with a normal strike. This is helpful for players with higher swing speeds. If you slice your balls now, you'll slice them worse and more expensively with a ProV1x because urethane balls are generally easier to shape (and thus will exacerbate your unwanted shaping).

Now, I'm assuming you've meant you slice the ball as opposed to a controlled fade. I personally like balls like NXT Tour, which are multi-piece balls that will spin around greens, but the Surlyn covers will not make the ball go crazy on longer shots.

No golf ball will reduce your slice. If you are talking low spinning it's only like 500-700 RPM's off the driver.

If you want to fix your slice, then I recommend fixing your swing for much more significant results.

If you want a lower spinning golf ball then I'd look at the following,

Callaway Supersoft

Callaway X2 Hot

Bridgestone E6

I was playing a round a couple of weeks ago and lost my ball but while looking I found a Bridgestone Treosoft. On the next tee which is a really difficult dogleg right par four with a creek on the left I hit the Bridgestone and killed it around the corner. Upon going around the corner the ball was twenty yards further than any Pov1x I had ever hit this year. I found the balls are only sold at Dick's at $30.00 for two dozen as they are discontinued. A hell of a deal and I can't tell the difference between them and my prov1x's. I have switched back and forth for the past several weeks and use both. Whatever comes out of the bag first. As a 24 handicap you don't need anything more.

My stick shot is a shot that starts straight but ends 20 yards right or where I'm aiming (with a driver) my miss us a horrendous slice that can almost be going backwards by the time it stops. Fixing my driver has been transformative. I'll still have a bad slice at the end of a round when I'm exhausted and my hips don't turn, but I'm also hitting the ball great on the other drives. The advice is really fantastic and easy to wrap your head around. You sound like you have a similar baseline to where I was 6 months ago, and it was an overnight fix for me. You have a ton of potential in that swing you describe.

If your swing speed is around 100 you'd be better with the E6, Callaway Chrome Soft or Titleist Pro V1 (The Pro V1X is for higher swing speeds).

Sticking with the car analogy, its like asking "I can't keep my car on the road, what car goes straight and won't end up in a ditch"? You would get driving lessons to stay on the road so you could then drive any car (or golf ball).

No ball can fix a slice but a ball can help. I agree the e6 would be a great choice as long as u dont require lots of approach or greenside spin. But when im slicing or hooking i dont want a ball thats 28 bucks a dozen cus im bound to lose a few. Check out wilson staff 50 elite. Great ball, low spin on full shots, great spin on approach shots and chips. Not bad off putter either and 12-15 bucks a dozen vs nearly 30 so if u slice a few ob, no big deal. Good luck!

I was in the golf store this afternoon and i asked the pro about losing distance with the supersoft and higher swing speeds and he laughed and said he really hoped not because hes been gaming them since they came out and his swing speed is around 100. May still be worth a look. I have finally settled on it. Good luck!

If you have swingspeed of around 100 MPH, you might try the e6 . I have driver swingspeed of around 85 MPH, and had trouble getting much spin on close-in wedge shots. For that reason, I went back to the Supersoft.

If you can create some close-in check spin on the e6 , it might be the ball for you.

Titleists of any kind? Don't ask me, I swore them off in the prior century.

While you're working on your slice, you should reduce that swing speed. If you are not controlling your ball, speed kills. If you are not in balance at the end of your swing, you are generally swinging too fast. Notice that the pros are rock solid at the end of their swings. Most golfers I see that lose their balance have straightened their legs too much during their swing. Work on a good base and you'll reduce your slice quite a bit. Plus, work with the videos posted above. Then you'll be able to play a better ball instead of rocks. I apologize to all those who use rocks. :-D

I don't think this is a particularly a good analogy. However, I'll play devil's advocate and continue with this theme...

Yes, driving lessons would fix the root of the problem, but until that happens is it better for that person to drive an 800 horsepower Winston cup type car or something like a 4-cylinder Ford Escort? One of these cars is a lot easier to keep on the road than the other for an inexperienced driver, or someone who doesn't drive very often.

I've only been playing a month or so after a long, long absence and after trying several different balls settled on the e6. I did try one of the others on your short list, the Supersoft, but it was too soft and I didn't get nearly as much distance as with the e6. Don't think I'm ready for the Pro V1x's yet... .
