Of course. It's a good excuse to get outdoors and drink beers with 3 friends for 5 hours. And the friendly competition makes it more interesting.

I prefer getting out with friends for 4 hours on the course.  Then maybe another hour afterwards over lunch and a beer.

Golf is certainly a social sport, but the socializing should still take a back seat to playing the game.  By that I mean that you participate socially during the natural breaks from play - you don't hold up the game to socialize.

Both social and individual.

I play for the love of the game.

I like the social aspects the game offers.

When I was younger, it also was for the fitness and joy of being outdoors in incredible surroundings.

Playing golf offers many great things, why have limitations to calling it strictly a social sport?

Golf is absolutely a social sport providing you aren't playing alone!

competitive golf.....not always so much.   (see Ben Hogan/ Tiger Woods)  etc. etc...

Totally agree. I go to the course to play the game. If you're not supposed to be talking when your playing partners are hitting and you consider how many shots 4 people can hit in four hours there simply isn't time to tell me your life story. That's what the 19th hole is for.

Golf is a game / sport that promotes social relationships.  With so much emphasis on pace of play, the days of working deals on the golf course are pretty much over but golf and country clubs are still a great way to meet people that share a common passion.   Today golf is played with less social interaction than in the past (except charity scrambles) but that's made up for on the 19th hole over drinks and lunch or dinner.

Ask yourself these questions:  Would you rather play golf alone, or with others?  Would you rather play golf with strangers, or with friends/family?

If you answered the latter to either question, it's a social sport for you.

For me it is.  99% of my rounds are played with friends, and probably 90% of those are played with some combination of the same 5-6 guys.  We enjoy the camaraderie as much as we enjoy the golf itself.

Definitely social for me ... that is why the score is just a by product for me and while I try to play good, its not upsetting if I don't play well.

For me, there's no question that its a social sport, in addition to being an individual effort.  If I consider the actual time spent planning and hitting shots for four players, there's still several hours of time that I'm spending with friends.  That could be primarily with one person, if we're riding in a cart, or with three other people, if we're all walking, but there's nearly continual chatter.  Of course there's always the witty banter on the range as we all warm up, and the serial lies told while relaxing with a beverage after the round.  For me, the individual competitive effort goes hand in hand with the social interaction with my friends.

I went to play Sunday as a single. Got sent out to catch up to the twosome already on the course and caught up by the second tee. Lovely guys, and even though the front 9 took us like 3 hours, it was an enjoyable experience. The two guys I played with decided to bail after the turn because the pace was brutal so I caught up with the threesome on 10th tee and asked to join. I immediately got a vibe from two guys that I wasn't welcome even though they said "of course." The third guy was very nice. I went out of my way to be genial and social but they really didn't make any effort to talk to me or even respond sometimes. It was really awkward and unpleasant. I then played another 9 holes after the round by myself and had a great time (though I was exhausted). So the point is golf doesn't have to be a social game, but it's better when it isn't actively anti-social.

Not really. I get the impression some don't like to hook up at the course.

      Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun.       Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
