Just wondering if Jason Day is an underrated golfer with the skill set he has. With all that Spieth has done, Jason has been in contention consistently. Over the past 3 years he's had 8 top 15 finishes including this win.

Just watching his swing. He's absolutely killing the ball. His driving right now reminds me of Rory last year when he was just unleashing hell upon on the ball and was hitting bullets down the middle.

The one major advantage he has is his ability to hit the ball very high. This might not allow him to win at The Open, unless it's a slightly less windy day. He should compete solidly in the other three majors year in and year out. Looking at his stats this year he's a complete player with his game.

If he stays committed he could easily push Rory and Spieth as being one of the three best players in the world. I for one hope he does. It would be a blast to watch a new Big Three come into golf at such a young age and give us 15 more years of awesome golf.

He's done well in majors, but he hasn't really performed as well in regular PGA events or even WGCs. That's where a guy like Jordan and even Rory have a big edge on him. They're more consistent week in and week out, in particular, Jordan. Jason has done better this year, winning 3 times, but I believe he only had two total wins before this season, one which came 5 years ago, and he hasn't contended as often as Jordan has. That being said, his skill level is unquestionable and if he brought this kind of game every week, he'd be mentioned in the same sentence as the other two guys.

He suffered a wrist injury after winning WGC-match play a couple of years ago just as he was peaking with his game.

Seems like the injury was a long setback.

He's been a fantasy stud for my team this season.

He'll get his due in the near future.....

I'd say he's underrated in the sense that he's had a great season and he doesn't get much hype from the media unless he's suffering from vertigo.

This season, he's 2nd in FedEx points, 3rd in Top 10 finishes and driving distance, 4th in scoring average and strokes gained total so I'd say that puts him in the Top 5 and I don't feel he's gotten recognition from the US media as a Top 5 player.

Now that he's won his 1st Major he'll get more coverage but I doubt he will ever get covered in the US like Spieth and other American players.

Yeah, no doubt this season has been awesome. Before this season, though, he's underperformed a bit in non-major tournaments. Really didn't have much to his resume besides one WGC win and some good finishes in majors. I think that's a main reason why he doesn't get mentioned with the others. What he really needs to do is follow this season up with another strong one next year and you'll see him mentioned with the other two more often.

yea... i'm a big fan of day, but he is a bit "cabrera like" in his results... seemingly always somewhere on the leaderboard in majors, but rarely seen there in the generic week-to-week tour events... i hope that changes... :-) edit: for the positive!

I think he's tremendously underrated, and it's because he hasn't won as much as he should given his talent. And then you have Rory and Spieth winning everything at a much younger age, which makes Day seem mediocre in comparison. In an era of golf where U25 golfers aren't dominating, we're looking at Day as the next big thing.

In my opinion, he's the only golfer on tour with the all-around skill set to match Rory when Rory is playing at his best. He hits the ball nearly as far, his short game is good, and his putting is really good. The big thing for him is his health. If he stays healthy, I think he could easily win another 5 majors, or more. I think we could see Rory, Spieth, and Day win 15 of the next 20 majors, too.

I don't think he's underrated because he hasn't won a lot, but he has had injuries and the vertigo thing. From what I've seen, he looks like he's ready to explode now. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Day, Spieth, McIlroy rivalry for another 10 years. Aussie, Irishman, American - a truly international rivalry. Awesome!

Wait a minute ^^^^^^^^ @DeadMan beat me to it!

JDay is not nor has he ever been underrated IMO. He's been hyped for 5 years. I've never heard anyone in the media say anything other than he WILL win majors. Sure, certain things about his game have been criticized as happens with Spieth and Rory. But everyone knew he was a major champion in the making since almost day 1.

I personally thought for a long time how is it that this stud hasn't won more and a major. If we go back even a last few years, he has shown up a lot on the front leaderboard. Anyway, major takes care of it all.

I agree, that was some mad driving.

that is a fair enough point... i don't think it would be easy to find anyone in the golf community that didn't think that he would hold up the big trophy someday, with "someday" being sooner than later*... i would say that he was "properly rated"... and frankly (even though he is on my "list" of guys i cheer for), i fear that because he finally broke through, the media will now overrate him.... again, i like him a lot... and i was pulling hard for him to win sunday... and i "think" (not "know") he has just as much "game" as rory and jordan (maybe not quite as much as rory, but close), but he doesn't "deserve" to be in the conversation with them yet... his lack of overall production at an older age than the other two is stark... however, if he shows up with that same game at augusta next april, i think he blitzes the place... then he can at least be "under consideration" to be in the conversation... my golf hope to get me through the winter... jason, rory and jordan hit augusta with wins in their back pocket and on top form... :-) * although... i don't think that anyone would have thought that sergio's best performance in a major would come when he was 19 years old, either... so it wasn't a lock that jason would win one, but it was hardly a surprise that he did....

I guess Jason has got some help from (shhh!) Tiger and Greg. They're going to ruin their arrogant, selfish images if this gets out.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Jason Day said a lot of people along the way helped him win the PGA Championship.

That includes Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.

Day and Woods have become friends and play a lot of practice rounds together. Day’s wife, Ellie, says her husband loves to ask questions, to learn what he can from mentors. And he hasn’t been afraid to pick Woods’ brain.

“He texts Tiger all the time,” Ellie said.

Day’s coach and caddie, Colin Swatton, said any advice Woods has passed on to Day is between those two, but he acknowledged Woods’ friendship has been an immense help to Day. “I can say definitely Tiger has been a help in allowing Jason to get better,” Swatton said.

Day has also learned a lot from Norman.

“Every time that I'm in a major championship, every time that I play in a PGA Tour event where I’m close and I don't finish, Greg is there to send me a text and say, `Don't worry about it. You're going to have plenty of these. Keep your head up. Keep moving forward. Don't stop fighting. Stuff like that.”

I agree. It does seem like that injury set him back. Now with 1 major, if he keeps working hard he could be like Rory with four majors really soon.

I think he's been overlooked more so than underrated. The whole Rory phenomenon took over the golf world a few years ago immediately followed by Speith. He's been working his way to this point. I have a feeling closing out the PGA the way he did could lead to more majors. He definitely has the game to win the masters and US Open.

i hope so... i doubt he will stop working at it, he doesn't seem to be the type who is going to lose his motivation... but it is a long way from 1 to 2, let alone 4... let alone "4 really soon".... besides rory and jordan, there are quite a few players who will be playing for those trophies, and there are only 4 of them a year... but i wouldn't cry tears of sadness if it happened... :-D

say it ain't so joe... no possible way that is true of the despicable cretin tiger woods... :-P as we all know, if another player asked tiger for help, tiger would go to their house and eat their puppies in front of their children... :-D

I agree with this. Heck, you could just go back a half dozen years and tally up all of the votes in all of the tst majors contests to see just how popular and un-underrated Day has been. He's always a trendy pick.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
