From time to time a surf the net just to look at the various types of swing patterns to improve my general knowledge and occasionally come accross differing swing models.

Many of these claim to be better on the back, legs, hips, wallet etc. than others. So it got my brain going (which is dangerous in itself), is this accurate or a load of BS?

one example: one search came up with DJ Trahan and his unusual swing. Now his dad claims a 70 degree shoulder turn and vertical arm swing is better on the back when compared to a more rotational swing.

Now, im not thinking of trying DJ's swing and as we know any swing done badly can be bad news but is one better than the other, is core rotaion better anatomically than an arm based swing?

Fingers crossed we have some orthopaedic surgeons on the site!

I am not a doctor, but…

From time to time a surf the net just to look at the various types of swing patterns to improve my general knowledge and occasionally come accross differing swing models.

I'm going with BS. If you want a swing that's easier on the part of the body you're talking about (say, the back), you use that part less and you do so less violently. If you want a swing that's easier on your back, you use it less (bend over less, twist it less, etc.) and you do those things at slower speeds.

The golf swing is not particularly hard (like being hit in the NHL or NFL) on your body, but repeated use is not easy on your body either.

one example: one search came up with DJ Trahan and his unusual swing. Now his dad claims a 70 degree shoulder turn and vertical arm swing is better on the back when compared to a more rotational swing.

It could be. You're using your back less. But how are you going to generate the speed you need to play as well as you can?

Now, im not thinking of trying DJ's swing and as we know any swing done badly can be bad news but is one better than the other, is core rotaion better anatomically than an arm based swing?

Well… the "regular" golf swing involves both. That swing just uses less of one thing.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.

    • I would not do anything until I met with an instructor and got your swing looked at. There are some obvious better club options out there though. Spend 50 bucks on a lesson, practice and start piecing together a bag that works for you. Enjoy the journey.
