Midsize grips and regripping

So I am in need of regripping my clubs and I am going to give it a shot myself. I have never regripped my own clubs before, but I am up for the task. Couple questions first....

1) I am thinking about going to a midsize grip as I held one of my step dads in my hands and it felt really good. If I go midsize, do I have to build up the tape, or do I just put one layer on like a standard grip as the midsize grip is already bigger? Stupid question I know, but just making sure.

2) Can you go to like home depot or Lowes and just buy double sided tape, or is there a specific double sided tape just for golf clubs?

You don't need to build up the shaft with tape - midsize grips are larger all by themselves.    Yes, you can use any double sided tape you want.    Secret ... USE LOTS of solvent (mineral spirits) - flood it inside the grip and also on the tape.    Too little solvent & it will get stuck if you don't have a compressor to "help" it on.   Biggest thing is you need is a workbench with a vice to hold the club firm as it sometimes takes a lot of elbow grease to get the grip on.    Use more solvent than you think you need to ... it's easy, have fun with it

Thanks Inthehole! One more quick question. Is there different sizes of double sided tape? Is there a certain size of double sided tape I need? And yes I have a work bench and a vice so I'm good to go there.

Looks great! The only problem is, I'm not sure I want to spend $40 just for the air gun and tool!

How tall are you (trying to correlate with hand size) ? I'm 6'1" and I can palm a basketball. When I used a standard size grip I would have a tendency to get too handsy at impact. The midsized was too bulky and I lost a lot of feel in my shots. I've settled in on 1/2 b/w standard and midsized grips (4 single tape or 2 double sided tape). On the driver I have one extra wrap. Just some things to think about before you grip your entire set as an experiment. You might try changing out one grip 1st to see if it is comfortable to you.

Thanks for the info. I just actually had my 7 iron regripped with a midsize so I can see how it feels before I do my whole set. Also what is the 1/2 b/w your talking about?

Hand size is a lot less relevant to grip size than you would think. I typically buy a medium sized glove, (can't palm a basketball) and I've used both midsize and Jumbo sized grips before without any issues.

I would also second the notion that he ought to change out one grip and use it for a while before making a final choice on size. He might realize he could enjoy an even larger size with some experimentation.

I know there is some variation in the # of wraps a golf shop will use to get the desired size you are looking for. Some tell me 8 wraps equals midsize and another tells me 4-5. When I asked about this discrepancy I was told that it depends on if they use one sided or doubled sided tape. To avoid confusion I will tell the shop to build up the grip halfway b/w standard and midsized (that is the 1/2 I was referring to). I agree hand size shouldn't be the deciding factor in grip size, but a golfer should probably take it into account when they first start making changes to the size of the grip.
