Hi, i recently upgraded from a beginner set. I purchased:

Callaway ft5 driver

Nike vrs x iron set, 4i through AW

Now i still have the fairway wood and the 4 Hybrid from the starter set (Wilson Ultra)

My question is: should i buy a 3 Hybrid as well to replace the fairway wood ?

Note, i need something for long par 3 for example, as my Hybrid does not  go more then 170 yards.

Or, to buy a 2 hybrid ?

Driver: Callaway ft5
Fairway Wood: Willson Ultra
Hybrid: Willson Ultra 4h
Irons: Nike Vrs X
Wedges: Nike Vrs X
Sand Wedge: Willson Harmonized 56
Putter: Top Flite Mallet
Balls: Titliest pro v 1, Nike Mojo, Callaway, Willson
Bag: Sun Mountain 7 dividers.

I went with Driver, 3W, 2-hybrid, 4i - pw. I found the 3h wasn't much different than my 4-iron so I went with an adjustable loft 2-hybrid that has bridged the gap between my 3-wood and 4-iron.

First of all, compare your 4i and 5i. If the two go about the same distance, you need to drop the 4i in favor of a hybrid.

Next, what mix of FWs and Hs will work for  you?

For FWs, you have power and forgiveness heads. You have the power heads for persons with good contact and clubhead speed. Design theme: Center of gravity a bit higher and more forward to lower spin. Think of Tour Edge Exotics Beta, Titleist 915Fd, or most FW variants with "Tour" or "Pro" in the name.

And, you have the forgiveness heads for persons who need help getting the ball launched (majority of golfers). These heads often have a COG somewhat lower and more rearward to get the ball up, and may have a lower profile head. Think Tour Edge XRail, Ping G**, and similar woods.

Before  you say you can't hit a FW off the deck, try some of the more forgiving heads. Also, test out a 4W, easier to hit than many people.

For the hybrids: If you find you hook standard hybrids, you may need to try a Pro or Tour head (less offset). If you have average swing speed, this may be a custom order, as golf shops sometimes don't stock many  P and T heads with R-flex shafts.

The bridge clubs (FW and H) are critical, so don't be afraid to get help from a good fitter.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
