Well I'll start with my golf career 7 years in maybe 200 rounds in my life. I'm 42. 6'3 strong former baseball player. I've avoided my driver for almost 3 years playing 3i off the tee and shooting 85-90 consistently for the past two years. This year started using a driving iron got another 20 yards off the tee And scored 80-86 in past 15 rounds. Also dialed back my wedges and irons by up %15 in yards, not 3i4i or 5i so much. Worked out my driver and finally found a repeatable swing. Last 3 rounds have been 78,77,79 driving distance on the mishits is 230 longest 280. Broke 80 on my home course fRom white tees for the first timE tonight. When should I move to the tips ? The tips at my home course are still 6800 not monster long. 73 rating. looking to lower my hc

Look at the longest par 4 holes on the card. If the length of those holes seem reasonable you should to fine. Next time you go out you may want to tee off from the tips on a couple of the longer holes just to see the landing area and the demand put on you by the second shot. As long as you enjoy it and it doesn't slow down the round you'll be fine.

If you're off the tee 255 on average, then 6800 should not be a problem especially since you are using an iron off the tee and presumably comfortable with 3i/4i? The longest hole we have from the 6800 yard tees (72.9/131) is 468 yards give or take, but it sounds a lot like you could play it DI/4i with your average distances?

You should average your 6 iron into all par 4's. PGA Tour players average mid-irons into all their par 4's. I see way too many players hitting long irons, hybrids and 3-woods into par 4's for their 2nd shots.

Also, its not about playing the longest tees. It's about playing the right overall yardage. There are some courses that have tee's I wouldn't touch and I hit the ball a long way.

BTW, @saevel25 makes a great point.

The average par 4 is only 394 yards on that course, so you should be able to hit DI/9i or even DI/PW into the average hole given your distances?

I hit the ball a similar distance to you, typical driver carry is around 240 yards, so my average total is 250 to 260.  I can play the back tees at my home course, at 6780 yards and CR 73.8.  We have a couple of downhill par-4s that are 450-460 range, and I can reach those.  A 430-yard uphiller is just about out of my reach.  On the other hand, there are some par-4s I still hit wedge to, so on balance its OK for me.

The thing to remember, golf is supposed to be fun.  A challenge too, but fun.  If you find that its just hard work because you're straining to reach most holes, go back to a yardage you're more comfortable with.  The other thing to consider is your playing partners.  If your friends prefer to play the more forward tees, you'll probably have more fun playing those same tees.

If you have the distance off the tee from the tips, to reach greens in regulation, then play from the tips.

I have seen folks mix it up from the different tees depending on the distance of a particular hole.  My cut off distance for driver, and 3 wood, to be safe, is around 430 yards. I can do the driver, driver off the deck thing for an extra 15+/- yards, but those two shots require great conditions, and a bit more luck for me to pull off.

I have run into some holes when didn't matter what set of tees I played from, since the course was so short. On the flip side there is a par 4 hole at the Rockwood course near FT Worth, that I could play from 15 yards past the womens' tee, and it would still kick my backside.

No my driver is 250 average. DI is 230[/quote] Seems like 470 yard par 4 are reachable on average. What's the scorecard look like?

I'll see but nothing at 470 i know for sure.

Probably not an issue for you to play the tips.

This reminds me of the last time I played a course in VT where the whites play 5228 and the tips play 5588.  I was playing from the tips on a 565 Par 5 I hit my driver and pushed it right about 250 yards over a twosomes heads in a cart onto their fairway.  My playing partner hit it straight and shorter than I did so since we were in a cart, we went to his ball first.  One of the guys drives over to me and he's older and I am about to apologize when he says I shouldn't be playing from the tips and I was a bit taken aback that I'm surprised I didn't have this face :-\ and instead said to him, "I'm pretty sure I can play from there," and he responded by asking in a very know-it-all tone, "what's your handicap?"  So, I responded, "that's irrelevant, I average around 250 from the tee and the ball went clear over  your head, so, I know I can play those tees," and then he left.  I'm sure after the conversation was over my face looked like this --->

If a ball whizzed over my head, the last thing I would say to the golfer who did it is "Tee it forward." :-D
