Am I within my rights to return this? or am I being stupid

New to this forum!

I bought myself a putter the other day, nothing too fancy nor expensive, but it was an odyssey white hot 2.0 1 putter (£80 or 120 USD so nothing too high end). Very happy with it but when I removed the packaging at home, I noticed a few small marks to the club. Now, if I made the marks myself, I wouldn't be so bothered, but because I bought this new, I kind of mentally want it to be brand new and perfect - if that makes sense.

I was just wondering, from the pictures below, if these are typical marks you might get on a new club? and if I am within my right/not being too anal to ask for a replacement?

pic 1: nicks which i can put my finger nails into underneath the lines, closest to teh word pro

pic 2: the slightest of dents by the light's shine, on the bottom right corner (left side of the light)

pic 3: two nicks, again finger nail deep, in the left hand corner

I just feel a bit too picky taking this back? but it's partly because I have no idea of what I should be expecting! and when some people take such good care of their clubs, I'm wondering if I have every right to take this back, even if those marks will make no difference to the clubs performance.

It's a little picky, but it's your money and if you're not satisfied with it, you should ask them to swap it out.  The putter is going to get nicks and scratches and none in the picture will have any effect on your putting.  I get it's the principal, you paid for a brand new putter and you want it to be brand new until you mess it up.

Pretty much agree with this.  I understand the desire for something BRAND NEW to be in perfect condition, but at the same time, it's not going to affect how you play and it's going to get marks like that and then some from normal use anyway.

If it was me, I wouldn't waste the time to return it, but it's not me, and I wouldn't begrudge somebody else if it was that important to them. :)

Those marks look like someone putted with it in the store and accidentally touched another putter when putting it back on the rack. It wouldn't bother me as they are hardly noticeable, and are part of owning a softer steel putter.

I would think that putter would look much worse after a couple of rounds riding in a bag, stuffed in a cup to pick a putt out and then carried back off the green in the same hand as your wedge.

Maybe you are way more careful than I am.

It's not like it's a driver that someone wacked the tee marker with.

A "near mint" club would probably sell for a 20-25% discount relative to an indentical club that was labeled brand new. Assuming the club actually was used in play (personally I have a difficult time telling from your photos) then the seller overcharged you by $20-30 by misrepresenting the condition.

If you like the club otherwise, I would contact him, point this out and ask for a partial refund of your purchase price. If he declines, then you have to decide whether you want to initiate a return or leave it be. Personally, I would say it's not worth the hassle, but others may feel differently.

I'm having a little trouble seeing the flaw.

My clubs look really crappy as they bump into each other in the bag. My putter is made out of a soft material and has quite a few dents in it.

I'd play it, but that is me, however I am a big stand up for your consumer rights person and have been known to make a few calls and write a few letters when justified.   I almost always get results when I do.  Golf is a funny mental game, the last thing you may want on your mind as you are standing over that 6 foot downhill putt for birdie is if some other duffer had been pawin your girl before you got your hands on her.

But it is obviously at least somewhat annoying to you so why not take it back? It will always be tainted in your eyes if you keep it.

I've returned items for less. Take it back.

It's like owning a new car, that first ding is always the most painful. After that, anything goes.

I'm not sure less is possible. I'm still squinting at the photos on a 32" monitor.
