new desk top

I'm going crazy here. I'm not a techie type. I want to buy a new desk top, spend around $1500. So I looked that up on the internet. got three lists of the top ten computers in that price range. That gave me 30 to pick from. I figured there would be some consensus, maybe the top 5 would be about the same. Nope, 30 machines. I think they pick from advertisers.  I don't have the skills to part one out and build it, nor the knowledge to know which CPU is better than another, and how will it all work together.

Looking for a very good gaming machine, normal home computing stuff, low video usage but medium photo editing. Because of limited desk room, it sits in the desk so needs very good cooling.

So I'll ask here, anybody have any thoughts? Any sites that would custom build a machine for a novice?
