Once you have good aim, read the green right, rock it back with your shoulders, keep head still? How do pros make golf putts?

Don't forget speed ;-)

To me the most important thing with putting is getting the correct speed to the hole. The second most is the correct path. If you have the correct path to the hole and your speed is too fast or slow you more than likely will not make the putt and more times than not will end up three putting. But if the speed is correct you will not make as many three putts during the round.

They practice, practice, and then they practice some more. At least that's what Jim Furyk once said.

The other thing the pros have are detailed descriptions of the greens they play on. For the most part, they play on  the same greens year after year. They know  all the little breaks, hills, and valleys the greens have to offer, and where to land the ball to take advantage of that information.  It's part of their working space so to speak. Anyone who works in an office, or a garage usually knows where everything is.

I think it's also important to remember that even the best golfers in the world 3 putt, and miss easy ones. How many 2ft lip outs did I see just today on TV? and those are the guys leading the tournament. Putting is a whole lot of feel, a good putter goes a long way too, I must have hit 50 different putters before I found the one I could control speed with the best. After you get a feel for speed control its just a "simple" matter of lining it up down the line and hitting it straight. I found that once I was over the ball I had a tendency to see the line more left than it is, so now I line up the club face before I get over it and then just trust it and hit it as pure as I can. I haven't hit more than 36 putts in a round since. Now if I could just get the driver to work....

Straight back, straight through, left wrist locked, rock shoulders, same distance back as through (started doing this thanks to the Do Not Accelerate thread here). Played 54 holes this weekend (2 courses) with only 1 3-putt, very quick undulating greens too. Also missed only 1 putt inside 5 feet. All 3 rounds in the mid-80s so the rest of my game sucked but I putted lights out.

You know what they say about practice... people spend way too little time on the greens, learn your stroke, forget about all the tips, putting is a unique club.

I get the line and speed right, that's how I make putts. When I miss one of the two, I miss the putt. :-)

With a putter... :w00t:

Speed, ball position, starting the ball on the intended line, loft ...

But to do that, they have a consistent, high quality, stroke, get on the SAM and get analyzed, and get fit for their putter, etc.

Good speed control I like to practise rolling the ball uphill and uphill to get the different feels Dave Stockton advice when he was on Fehrety about not hitting or calling it putting but think rolling the ball and stroking the ball like a paintbrush is excellent advice

Straight back, straight through, left wrist locked…

Left wrist locked is a feel killer. Strokes should not be "wristy" but the wrists should be soft and change a bit during the swing.

You probably don't put SBST either. Few do. Virtually nobody does on putts over about 10 feet.

You're correct on SBST over 10 feet, I'm sure that's not actually occurring literally, probably not on shorter putts either, but that is my mindset, it's what I hope to feel. Left wrist locked might be a similar thing, it's my thought but probably doesn't literally happen, esp on longer putts. When I do feel it measurably "break", I pull it.

I wanna know how you get the speed right on a putt that has to climb a little bit, then run down a maybe 3% slope and not either come up five feet short, or run 8 feet past the hole. I just feel like that putt is impossible. There is a setup like that on our practice green, and I just can't make any progress getting better at it. I am not trying to make the putt, just two putt from about 15 to 20 ft and I would be very happy.
