I recently visited the PGA Tour Stop store in St. Augustine, Florida. I talked with one of their clubmakers. He told me that he worked at Golf Galaxy in another part of the US for a number of years before coming to Florida. I asked him this: If I made a #5 iron longer than the standard length of 38 inches, would the head have a more upright lie or flat lie. He told me that making it longer would make the clubhead more upright.

What do forum members say -- is he making a true or false statement?

I thought about that few times before...very interesting question.
This is my logical guess...I could be totally wrong though.
One has a tendancy to maintain their comfort swing plane regardless of shaft length, then longer shaft will pushed the head slightly away from you, resulting upright lie.
Reversly, shorter length will give you flatter lie.

In that sense, I guess clubmakers are right.

Agree with Fastrack. Clubmaker's right. When you lengthen the shaft, holding the club as you did before will raise the toe. You'll need to flatten the club head in order to compensate for the lengthening of the shaft.

If you doubt this response, do this simple test. Stick something down the grip to simulate the lengthening of the shaft. Then try to assume your regular grip around this extension and view the result.

Changing the length of the club does nothing to the lie angle of that club. It's a measurement of the club, not of how you hold the club. It's probably (maybe definitely) true that your clubs will need a different lie angle depending on the length of the club.

To answer your question:

True.

Why question such a good clubmaker on an Internet forum? Strangers on the Internet more trusted than someone you can question in person?

Just curious.

Because salespeople can and often do sound unconvincing. It is perfectly normal for an unconvinced person to question another’s statements if they feel ANY doubt about that person’s credibility, sincerity, or logic.

Let me guess – you have never been told something blatantly wrong by anyone with “credentials?” P.S. Getting others opinions is a natural and wise response to such situations.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
