Okay well I was wondering if any of you play a trap draw? It's really the only shot I can hit with my irons. ANyway my question is at the top of my backswing I roll my wrist out not keeping it straight but not cupping or cuffing it. Whichever term you use to decribe the opposit. Anyway I strike the ball fine it does seem to put strain on my left tricep and shoulder. I strike the ball very well. 185+ with my 6 iron and for me thats nice.

Part of the reasoning I do this it also helps me keep my hands in on the downswing and makes for a crisp solid ball strike.

What is a "trap draw"?

Trap draw is hitting the ball with a slightly closed/hooded clubface. You trap/pinch the ball against the turf with the head of your iron. It typically flies a little lower and due to the closed face it has draw spin on it. You must hit down and through the ball to accomplish this.

Personally, I have some difficulty controlling the distance of a trap draw.

Why would you do that? You can't compress the ball between the club and the grass, only against the clubface.

If you want to hit it lower, ensure that the club stays below your waist on the followthrough - and/or use a less lofted club.

I do that with all my irons, don't you?

Personally, I have some difficulty controlling the distance of a trap draw.

Why does that not surprise me.

He's talking about what it FEELS like, which is different than what it is. Obviously, physically, the ball is never hit down into or against the turf.

But I get the feeling you're being picky despite knowing what he's talking about. The best teachers in the game use this phrase, about "trapping" or "pinching" the ball against the ground. It's a good "feeling" phrase even if it's not actually correct (or possible).

Uhm... Or not, and just use proper technique. A trap draw can come in handy many times.

No need to be rude, dude.

FWIW, I use a trap draw more often when hitting to a larger target (the green) or when getting out of trouble (or around trouble, like a big tree in front of me). I hit a trap draw off of pine straw last week with a 3-iron that never got more than 10 feet off the ground and hooked a good 50+ yards, for example, and one of my favorite shots on one of the holes at my golf course asks for a hard draw for the second shot on a par five.

I believe "bowing" you left wrist is the term, which does close the clubface. All good ball strikers have a straight or slightly bowed top wrist at impact.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, what you are describing is the proper way to make contact. Where is the ball in your stance?
