Who introduced you to golf?

My neighbour saw me play baseball when I was 8 years old. The next day he politely said to my father," your boy has spirit,BUT, has he ever hit a golf ball?"He knew baseball was not my thing.lol I will forever be in his debt. Anyone else have a beginning golf story you would like to share?

My old friend Kurt, He introduced me to golf when I was about 16 years old, he played in high school and took me out to the driving range a couple of times, let me borrow his iron which I remember benting at the driving range.

Kurt doesn't play golf anymore and I play at least once a week.

How did you bend his iron? Is that why he doesn't play anymore?lol

My mother's business partner.

Before I started, he gave me 3 golf books and I was tested, particularly on etiquette, before being allowed to step foot on the grounds, let alone play (that came after instruction.)

When I was 11 my Dad and Grandpa took me out on a tough little nine hole track in Rossland B.C. that was never that busy. I was hooked and have played ever since (I'm now 38).

Still play with my Dad who is 60, but unfortunately my last round with my Gramps came in the summer of 2006. He is too crippled up due to arthritis now(he's 82), but I still take him out on a nice summer night and he rides while I play a quick nine. It's a nice hour and a bit to visit with each other.

This summer my mom asked me if I wanted to go to a golf camp at the local club, and I said sure, since I have always had fun playing but never took it seriously. Well after the 1st week my instructor said that I have amazing natural talent, and that if I worked hard enough I could probably play college golf. Well I figured, its fun, so why not. I ended up going to every week of camp this past summer and I'm hooked. I dropped 20 strokes this summer, and am hoping to play college golf.

p.s. I'm 14, well 15 in a week

So, it all started the summer that I returned to video games after a two year hiatus. My first year of undergraduate studies (UC Irvine), games like Rainbow Six took up a good deal of my time, so I swore them off.

But, summer after my third year, my then-roommate Nick had an X-Box, and I started playing a few games. I played some RPGs on it, such as Star Wars: Knights . After a month of this, one of Nick's friends - Brian - gave him Tiger Woods 2004 . Nick wasn't really into golf, but he had seen the game at Brian's and wanted to give it a try.

I came home one day and heard the announcers, Gary McCord and David Feherty, and thought they were hilarious. The game also had RPG elements - increasing stats and so on - so I gave it a try. I played through it so much that summer.

Nick and I weren't roommates during the school year, but the following summer, Brian took me to the driving range a few times. A few months later, I got my grandfather's old clubs from my parents, and went to hit balls a few times. My buddy Paul later took me to get new irons at a shop in O.C., and I've built up a small collection since.

My father used to drop me off at an executive course in Tyngsboro, Mass. when I was a 13. I picked balls off the driving range ($1.50/bushel), played a round or two, drank a lot of soda and generally hung out until he picked me up on way home from work.

Five years ago, after years of cajoling, best friend Terry Fiedler persuaded me to "take a hit off the crack pipe." Been hooked ever since. We last played together in July '06. He died, unexpectedly at 47, a week later. I think of him often, but especially every time I touch a club.

I am very sorry tohear of your freinds passing. I too lost a freind recently

He is watching down at you making sure you are safe and keeping your head still.lol good luck

Thanks. And whenever I land a shot on the green only to have it roll off, or have a putt lip out, I can hear him saying, "this course is tricked up."

My grandfather's played forever, and my dad used to play about 25 years ago. Last year we had a family reunion at my grandfather's country club in Austin, and all the guys went to play a round of golf, including my dad. I had no interest in playing, but was allowed to go along drive a cart. Everyone was having such a good time, even my dad, who hit about 10 decent shots all day.

That sense of pure joy with a little bit of friendly competition I noticed that day was what got me interested, but I didn't really do anything about it till this past spring, when my dad bought his own set. I'd just graduated from college and was bumming around for a month, so I had time to spend around 4 hours a day hitting practice whiffle balls around the back yard. Just learning to get the ball in the air was such a "natural high," there's no way I couldn't be playing right now.

what is a whiffle ball? Is is the plastic ball with holes in it?

Some cool stories here. Mine isn't as touching as the dad & grandpa taking you out.

I played in a company golf scramble as the 'rank amateur' on my team. I learned a grip and not much else on the range before we started. My goal was for my team to use at least one of my shots that day. We used several, but I hit a driver to within 8 feet of the hole on a 143 yard par-3(!) and a little later hit a 20 foot putt for a birdie. That was my first hit off the 'crack pipe' and I haven't put it down since. Of course nowadays that little down hill par-3 is easy for me to fly over with a pitching wedge if I'm not careful. Good times.

Nobody in my extended family had ever played golf. On a lark, I thought it would be a good thing to try with my son on vacation. He was 15, I was 53 and neither of us had ever picked up a club. I took him out to a hi-pressure course at Nags Head. Major mistake.

We were kicked off the course for holding up play at the first hole, pretty embarrassing moment I can tell you. But they were nice enough to give us a rain pass for after-hours when traffic was slow.

But "once you're bit, that's it". After three years of struggle we both understand what a challenge this game is and how it can turn into an obsession.
