Did anyone catch the comment Kelly Tilghman made last night just before the telecast ended?

Her and Faldo were discussing the young players taking on Tiger this year (right after Dottie's interview with Watney) , but trying to make an analogy about all the young guys 'fighting' Tiger for the season, she said something to the affect of 'them ganging up and lynching him in the back alley'. Don't quote me, but it was something very close to that..

Just curious if anyone else caught it, or if there will be super-over-reaction fallout from this for her?

I didn't catch it. A poor choise of words, probably. But I'd imagine she didn't intentionally use those words to have the negative racial overtone. If that is indeed what she said?

Considering Woods is one-quarter Chinese, one quarter Thai, one quarter African American, one-eighth Native American, and one-eighth Dutch, a racial thing would have to be pretty much a stretch for me. A black man just won the Iowa Caucus for the Dems. Is there racism out there - sure but I don't think it is nearly as pervasive in sports as some would like to believe. I really do not believe there was anything racial in the comment.

White people been lynched too....

I don't think she would say something like that, and I hope she didn't

oh she said it, b/c I replayed the DVR several times just to make sure I heard right. I have no doubt that it wasn't intentional at all...I can't even imagine what it's like to sit there an be mic'd for 5 hrs coming up with new stuff to say all the time.

That said people have been reprimanded/fired for less, so I was just curious if anyone else heard it live like me.

Someone is always trying to make more of a statment than their is. I remember hearing things about jack N, greg N and other top players about that the rest of the field was hoping they would fly to the wrong tournament.

If the best player is not in the filed your chance of winning is greatly improved, don't take comments out of context and the world would be a better place for all.

All the young guys want to win but they know if Tiger is in the field their are probaly playing for second place.

Golfchief, I am not taking her comments out of context, in fact I intentionally tried to provide the context of the statement in my post, so to give a clear picture of what she said. Nor am I trying to drum up any useless negative banter, I am simply curious if anyone else heard it, so far I can't find anyone who has. There isn't a doubt in my mind that she did not intent for it to sound negative/racial or what have you, but at the end of the day, she is responsible for what she says on air. I know what I heard and while I wasn't offended, or even close, I will be very surprised if there are zero people who were offended. The only thing they have in their favor is it's the first event of the year, and fewer people would tune in say compared to the TPC in May. I'm still researching to find a video clip to post so others can at least see it, as I said, so far no one appears to have seen it on this board other than me. Stay tuned..

To JayB and others:

I'm sorry if your sensibilities were offended. It was not my intention to offend anyone, nor did I believe I wrote anything offensive in language or meaning...and last I checked this was a forum for discussion and points of view. So I wanted to know 1) if anyone heard what I did and 2) get your opinion on it. If you have not even heard/seen the video/audio of it, I don't know how you can have an full opinion just solely based on what I remembered and posted. She said what she said, I simply am relaying it. Not surprised btw, that there is lots of video of the weekend with her and Faldo, but none from the Friday round recap.

To JayB and others:

You didn't offend me at all mate, don't worry.

It simply winds me up as 3 - 5 years ago no one would even notice this as a subject, but now because of the governments desperation for multicultural societies that 'look good' anything that you say innocently can be construed as a racist comment, can you honestly tell me that you think her comment was in any way or form racially motivated, if not then why mention it? Because the government has us believe that anything and everything is racist, for example in England, during the most recent world cup local councils did not want us hanging England flags outside our windows as it upset foreigners, more recently Baa baa black sheep has now been outlawed as it disrespects 'blacks' (of course i do not use that term racially) and it is now baa baa multicultural sheep. If you can see what I mean, it is completely over the top, and I think that even starting this topic shows the effect political correctness is having on the public.

I don't understand why the word lynch would be considered racist? please someone let me in on this.

Basically, the word "Lynch" comes from the last name of the most successful slave driver during slavery times...he was famous for doing the most diabolical things in order to break a slaves will and inner fight. He would kill family members in front of the children, he would hang them in front of family members, anything he could in order to keep them in order....soon enough this "Lynch" guy became the most famous and sought after slave driver or whatever you want to call him...In recent history the word "Lynch" became a colloquialism for hanging black people in the south, such as in the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s. Mainly when the KKK was at its peak. To rap things up, to imply, whether it be jokingly or seriously, that someone should get together and "Lynch" Tiger Woods is very insensitive. I don't think that this lady is racist but, I do belive that there are some hidden racial tensions within her, possibly from past experience, or family members. I mean I'm black so I wouldn't really know for sure. But some of my white friends tell me that a lot of people in there families make racial jokes or are just plain racist...and sometimes it can rub off on you in a slight way.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
