I use to pull my PW on full swings, but seem to hit the GW fine. Was told I was swinging a bit too hard. Now I club down to a 9 iron rather than swinging away if the distance\wind dictates. It seem to help. If your talking about green side chipping (quarter\half swings), it's probably another issue like foot position, grip, club face, etc. One of these experts here can most likely help. Do you have a gap between the 9 iron and 52 Vokey (i.e. swinging the 52 harder than normal at 100+ yards)?

I tend to do this at times. How I fix it:

Stance slightly open but shoulders square
Swing towards the target (check divots)
Stay in there throughout the swing (don't bail out looking at the ball too early)

I hope this helps...

When I start pulling my wedge shots, I make sure that I am pivoting my hips. When I pull my wedge shot, I am using all upper body and than I come over the top. If I think about clearing my left hip, it usually straightens me out.

For me, it is tempo. Sometimes I get a little quick on the backswing which usually ends up in a pull.

Like the previous poster, I try to make sure I'm using my whole body, rather than making an "arm swing."

Old thread but I found in the past year or so I have been pulling my PW big time.  I am talking like 25 yards left.   But it doesn't happen with my other clubs.

Could it be because I have the ball to far forward in my stance?  I normally place the ball in my middle of my stance on wedge shots.

Should it towards my back foot?

I will try slowing my backswing down and using more body as well as the above posters mentioned.

With my swing generally my wedges are played a ball back from the middle of my stance unless I'm in trouble, in which case it's just inside the back foot.

This is an old thread...

I just want to add that trying to swing too hard with the wedges will also get you off line.  I try to go no more than 85%.

I like the title of this thread. It would be even weirder if he was pulling SOMEBODY ELSE'S wedges.

Middle of the stance is pretty much the norm for wedges.

Is it a pull or a hook? If it's a pull, that means that the face is closed to the target and you are coming over the top. It's it's a hook, there are a bunch of possibilities, depending on where the ball starts (ie. push-hook, pull-hook, straight-hook).

A big reason some people will pull the shorter clubs, such as wedges, can be due to lack of acceleration through the hitting area.  Try taking a little bit shorter of a backswing and really make sure you accelerate through the ball into a complete balanced finish position.

It's definitely a pull and not a hook because it starts left immediately.

I do tend to take the club away on the inside so maybe I am not holding it and looping it around coming outside in.

I will try the above mentioned tips at the range hopefully this week if they are open.

  • 2 weeks later...

Went back to the range.

I tried taking a 1/2 backswing and accelerating through the ball.  Catching it well but still a major pull.

I can't tell if I am coming outside in because I am hitting off a mat and cannot check the divot.  Also there was nobody with me to check my swing.  (grass tees are closed this time of year).

Next time I go to the range I am going to do the Sarah Brown drill.  Extend the club staight out, pull it back to the top position then swing.  That way I know I will be coming inside out for sure and will see how it effects the shot.

Did you get a dynamic lie angle reading when you got fit. Of course there can be a lot of reasons why this is happening, but a lot of people have this problem when their lies are off. Did you swing on a lie board? Also big box manufactures don't have a tight tolerances with equipment, so a lot of times the club is not really what it says it is. (seriously this happens all the time!).  At 0 degree loft lie has no effect, but when you get to your wedges lie has a HUGE effect...so this is why people will tend to pull their wedges, but wont see a huge pull with long irons. Are you finishing completely balanced? You really shouldn't take swing advice on a forum, just because you will get a million different ideas as to why this is happening, which will just screw you up more. What you should do is go see a teacher/fitter who can check your lies dynamically. ( checking lie angles without swinging means nothing..because how you come into the ball can be completely different then how you set up).

I'd lay money down that your lies are too upright. Or certainly more upright relative to the rest of your irons. The more lofted an iron is the more the face points left if a club is too upright, so it would show up far more with an L wedge than an 8-iron for example.

Get them checked.

Sincerely,

Andrew Rice

It is very easy to get steep with your wedges and it can cause you to pull your shots. Since the loft is so high you don't notice the curve of the ball as much. The best way to fix it is to make sure you have a one piece take away and to get a full shoulder turn that way you can come more from the inside and not outside and pull the shot. I had some trouble with pulling my wedges and this kept me from pulling them.
