Who thinks Phil will still be great some day? Anyone? Will he even get 45 wins by the time Tiger has 90? He is #2 in the world and is playing like he is #15. I'll bet he falls out of the top five in the world this season, maybe even the top ten.

He seems like a nice enough guy, but it is clear he is not living up to his potential on the tour. Watching him play is like watching a slow motion car wreck. He sprays the ball all over the course off the tee, misses short putts constantly and tries off-the-charts dumb shots at every oppportunity.

The guy is a slouching bundle of self-doubt and no matter how many brilliant chip shots he hits in a round, they seldom compensate for his errant shots. He hits those great chip shots so often because he is constant needing to hit them to save his booty.

He seems resigned to his place in history as a decent "also ran" during the Tiger era.

I think it's going to be tough to be seen as great in the Tiger era, except for the obvious one. Phil has won 32 times, 23 of which were in the Tiger era. This includes 3 majors. I'd say that's a pretty good - if not great - record.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I think Lefty will probably get another two tournament wins this year. I like watching his play, especially his approach shots and chips. He's definitely got a lot of talent. Have you ever seen him ever hit a ball backwards, over his back?

With his win total, I think the term "also-ran" is a bit harsh. He has the numbers to get into the golf hall of fame, and if he can add another 5-10 wins he's in some pretty exclusive company.

I'm not a huge Phil fan, with his 'aw shucks' demeanor, but the guy is up there when you look at history IMO.

I find watching Tiger (although impressive) annihalating the field everytime he plays "boring" but that just my oppinion.

Yeah id disagree aswell. Phil wont slip this year, I see where you're coming from though because he hasnt played well since before the US open last year. He just has some rust from that wrist injury to shake off. I imagine he wont pick up steam untill mid-season or so. When he's playing well he is one of the, if no the most exciting player to watch.

Who thinks Phil will still be

I hate to say it, but your post is complete nonsense. Anyone who doesn't like watching Phil play is in denial, he's probably the most exciting player in the game today (yes even more so than SaintTiger). Phil is the unquestioned second best player in the world right now, and I would be shocked if he wasn't still ranked #2 at the end of the season. He seems as motivated as ever to realize his vast potential, and he'll probably end up winning a major (maybe even a couple) this season. Unlike a lot of people (mostly people who know less about golf than they let on), I'm not ready to say that Tiger's going to make this season a complete wash!

Who thinks Phil will still be

theres only 1 Tiger Woods if you haven't noticed BUd.....not every player can play week in and week out (other then Tiger) on the same level of consistency as he can/does......Phil is still a GREAT golfer weather you think so or not....all I can say to you is if you don't like watching him play, simply turn off your TV when he's on.....

Who thinks Phil will still be

I couldn't DISAGREE more... Phil is going to be in the hall of fame and will be regarded as one of the best players in the game. He needs some more major wins, but I think they will come. If he wins two per year the next 8 years (until he's 45) he will finish with 48 wins. That's pretty damned impressive, and I would bank on him breaking 50. There is only one Tiger, but there is also only one #2 and until I see something great from someone else it is PHIL. It was Ernie a few years back, and Jim Furyk is consistent and good, but right now Phil is a significant bit better than the next best.

the title of this thread is funny. i cant say that i "hate" the guy, as that's a strong word, but i dont generally like him or root for him.

to me, it seemed like he was playing some really uninspired golf. like whatever it was that has been driving him to play thus far has been lost. it really seemed to me like he was just trying to get through his rounds, with a lot of effort.

I kind of agree that Phil's just not that much fun to watch. No dought he's a great player but he alway's seems to finish about how I expect he will. I think maybe looking back over the last few years you could say he was the 2nd best player but as of today and living in the present I would say Rory,KJ, and Stricker are a step ahead of him- I mean these guy's are playing good right now and Phil seems to be off a little. I do hope he does well- I root for everyone on the PGA as they all deserve a win.

When looking at a player's performance it is easy to compare them to Tiger. I believe this to be unfair to the player in question (Mickelson) and to Tiger. Very simply put, Phil is no Tiger.....nor is anyone else for that matter. Phil on his own merit is a GREAT player, three majors and 30+ wins is simply phenomenal, give him credit there.

As for competing week in and week out ....Phil is on par to his WGR of #2, he beat a loaded field (including Tiger) at the Deutsche Bank last year, not to mention winning the player's earlier in 07'.

It is easy to compare but as Phil said himself last year, the “guy” (Tiger) is just in another league with all the wins and majors.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he wins one of the majors, just a guess, but I see it happening.

SubPar, you kill me! "A slouching bundle of self doubt"? I love it!
Phil did look uninspired last weekend. But he's a winner, no doubt. Most of the time I find him fun to watch because it always seems like his round will derail at any moment.

It's just just freakin' painful to watch and wait for the inevitable shot into the parking lot, or the fantastic pitch from behind the hot dog stand to 4 feet, only to see him miss the putt. At least I enjoy watching Sabatini or Pat Perez melt down... they are jerks. I guess it is just hard to watch it happen to Phil because he seems like a good guy with a load of natural talent.

Not sure that I would totally agree with all these comments about Phil. I was never his greatest fan for years, I think until he won his first Major when I started to appreciate what a genuine guy he really is. Unfortunately for Phil he has been in Tiger's limelight for years and probably will be for the rest of his career - however, he is not boring! Some of the shots Phil even attempts are unbelieveable, do people remember the shot he played out of the bunker last year from about 170 out through a gap in trees and found the green. Ok, so that is not going to work all the time and when it goes wrong he looks stupid, but he had the guts to go for it - that is why he is entertaining to watch, just like Garcia and others!

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
