he played really well at the buick...but he only hit 48% of the fairways....i know he hit 80% of the greens, but the rough will be mucho longer when its an actual MAJOR GOLF TOURNEMENT. not that he's still a favorite....i just see someone hitting it straighter for 4 days and no having to kill the ball out of knarly rough.....anybody agree????

Tiger is the master at being able to plot his way around a golf course - if he has his game on which I believe he will, then I believe there is not many contenders who will get close to him at Torrey Pines. Yes, the rough will be different and there will be certain changes after the USGA has had their impact - but Tiger has proved over the years in British Open's and other US Open's that he simply knows how to win on any type of course!!

I will be very surprised if he does NOT win!

I have noticed that TIger has a diff. game plan for every course he plays so I'm guessing he will be hitting a lot of irons at Torrey Pines this year.

good points, but he DID hit a lot of irons and 3-woods at the Buick-his driving distance is somewhere in the 90's, accuracy at 162. if hazards come into play and they are actually HAZARDOUS hazards, somebody who hits a few more fairways is going to have a better shot. just speculation. if he plays in the final group though, the field is toast (they might be anyway)

its early in the year, tiger is still dusting off the winter cobwebs

I agree, His driving percentage wasnt that great because getting in the fairway wasnt one of his top prioritys, he knew that if he missed the fairway and found the rough he still wouldnt be in bad shape considering he kills the ball anyway. For a major tournament at a course such as Torrey Pines , he knows that the cost of hitting a ball in the long grass will be much more than it would be at the Buick Invatational. He knows that he needs to hit fairways at Torrey Pines in order to come out on top. Just watch, I bet his driving distance average wont be as far at Torrey Pines as it was at the Buick Invatational, but then again, he's Tiger! "Agressive" is his middle name.

I agree with the first post, if the US Open was tomorrow, but I think by the time the US Open rolls around he will have his driving straightened out and he will have a much higher hit %, then he will win the US Open.

Here's what I play:

Does Tiger even need the driver? He could just carry the 5 wood and the two iron instead of just one. He can put thet three wood out there quite a ways, plus hes an excellent long iron player. I don;t think Tiger will have any trouble suceeding at Torrey.

Let's not forget this stat...after one tournament...27.75 putts per round vs. the tour average of 29. He read the greens at Torrey better than anyone in the field. I think the flatstick is going to be the difference maker at the Open.

While I do agree that he can't win by playing like he did at the Buick, you know that he just won't. He'll hit higher lofted shots to minimize the amount of run the fairways are going to give.

The greatness of Woods is the space between his ears. Golf is a game of recovery and who does that better than El Tigre?

The only way he won't win is if his putter abandons him. His putter has been ON FIRE.

Golf is fortunately unpredictable enough that you just made a brave but not unreasonable call.

However what is certain is that TW will work really hard to bring the right game to the US Open. He may well have used the Buick to try the things he thinks he will need come June. He will probably make the time to return to the course before that week also.

Could his driving affect his ability to win there? Of course
Will he try to minimise that threat? Of course
Will you really bet against him? .....

    • I have a putting mat in my office. It's 9 feet long almost 4 feet wide. I've drawn a line down it in order to practice hitting my line and stuff. Works fine for what it is.  While I'm not a fan of lining up a line on my golfball for every putt. I think for practice sessions it can have a lot of value.  To me this product makes sense. This is the first time I've seen it. It showed up as an add on the right side of the TST webpage. What do you all think? PuttAIM Laser Training Aid Get ready to dominate the greens like never before. PuttAIM Golf is a golf putting aid that uses laser technology to help you improve your game. This device works to ensure your putts are aligned properly and on track...
    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
