Now there have been some GREAT drives. And there have been some great drives in the SUPER BOWL. There have even been phenomenal drives to WIN the Super Bowl. . .
But there has NEVER been a PHENOMENAL DRIVE TO BEAT AN 18-0* OPPONENT in the last 2 minutes of a super bowl.

Was it the greatest come-from-behind-super-bowl-winning-drive ever??

I'm a huge giants fan and this game clearly showed me that eli is a amazing. That break away in the pocket and tyree catch was the highlight of the game. Eli clearly outplayed the best player in the game, brady, and gave his team a win. Hats off to the d for knocking that pretty boy brady on his a** 18 times. SUPER BOWL CHAMPS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!! Best 4th quater drive evah!!!

Nah, I can name a few better.

Off the top of my head was the first Superbowl after the AFC/NFC merger. Mike Curtis picked off an interception with less than a minute to play, and Unitas and the Colts got the ball on the 30 yard line and wound-up winning 16-13 over Dallas.

This was also the first game a member of the losing team got named MVP in a game, and also the first time a defensive player got named MVP at all, if it's believable. Good ol' Chuck Howley.

So yes, this was a good Superbowl, and a great last-minute drive... but no, it isn't the greatest I remember (though it might be if I were a Giants fan ).

Not by a long shot, no. You forgetting "The Drive"? And there were others.

Plus, the defense won the football game, not the offense. If the offense had the ability to produce, they'd not have needed the long drive at the end. What was the stat - 17 plays inside Pats territory in the first half and 3 points? I'll give Eli credit for stepping it up in the playoffs this year, and for winning a Super Bowl. I'll still take Ben Roethlisberger over Eli, and the numbers back that up, too. Still, a great run for Eli and the only INT he threw in the playoffs was a carom - good stuff. And yeah, as a Steelers fan, I'm extra happy that the Pats lost. Now I hope the Walsh thing pans out and the NFL and maybe even stupid Arlen really come down on them. One observation, and I'll plainly admit I didn't watch the whole game or most of the Giants' playoff games: is it just me or is every pass Eli throws a floater? I don't think I've ever seen him gun a pass. The ball to Tyree would have been much better gunned than lobbed up there. He had escaped pressure and had time, yet he still kind of lollipopped it up there. P.S. Plaxico has matured tremendously since leaving the Steelers. So while the Steelers may "miss him" now, they didn't when he left. He was pretty sucky (lotsa drops) and had a bad 'tude in Pittsburgh.

Hines Ward makes a statement about needing a tall receiver. I guess Santonio Holmes is a midget? Then, the NY media runs with it, stating how much they missed Plaxico. Pittsburgh won a SB without Plax. Did they miss him, then?

As for Sunday, it was a great game. Greatest ever? Hard to say. Biggest upset? No.

I was really hoping that both Strahan and Eli would have dedicated the win to Tiki Barber. All the shots that Tiki took at both of them were unnecessary. They both have SB rings and the last laugh. Tiki has.....the Today Show.

I'd say it was the best ever because of the historic significance.
A perfect season hung in the balance, not just a superbowl.
On that 4th and 1 . . . 1/2yd less gain and the Pats would have the undefeated season.

There have been other great drives, but this one will be remembered longer, and it had one of the best plays ever, Eli's escape and heave and the 'Snatch' by Tyree. (Can't call it the 'Catch' because Dwight Clark and 49ers have that one)

It was a pretty phenomenal performance by the Giants! I absolutely hate the Patriots and especially Brady and Belichick. They are such sore losers and it would have been an absolute travesty had the Giants not won that game. They dominated in terms of possession and really looked like they wanted the win more than the Patriots. Personally I thought it was an amazing game winning drive up the field, especially that one moment when Eli escaped from being sacked and David Tyree somehow managed to grasp the ball from mid-air. Unbelievable performance from the Giants - congratulations you are the Superbowl Champions!!

Unlucky Patriots LOL - your season will be remembered not for an 18-1 record but for choking at the more crucial part of the season!

Huh?

That's only true if you consider "perfect" to include "being caught cheating, fined, penalized, etc."

I don't. And I may be shown to be more correct in the coming weeks if that Walsh story has any merit (personal hunch: he's just looking for his 15 minutes and has little in the way of significant physical proof or evidence).

It may not have been the best drive ever, but the Manning to Tyree play will go down as possibly the best play in Super Bowl history. Manning spins out of a sure sack and whips the ball down field to Tyree who goes up with 2 guys and makes a ridiculous catch. All in the game winning drive against an 18-0 opponent. The catch rivaled Swan's against Dallas and the fact that Eli even got the ball off was amazing. As a whole it was incredible.

Everything seems more important right after it's done. Let's see how y'all think about it in 10 years.

A lot of that catch was luck. A lot of the throw was luck. And "whips the ball" isn't quite true. Eli's arm isn't capable of "whipping" anything but his noodle. I wonder if he plans to increase his arm strength at all and stop lobbing every pass he throws.

Huh?

A few days after the NFC Championship, a story was getting played in NY about how much the Steelers missed Plaxico. Apparently, Hines Ward had made a comment that the Steelers needed to go out and draft a tall receiver. This went on for two days on ESPN1050. Apparently, they all forgot how Pitt won a SB without Plax.

The Steelers don't miss Plaxico all that much. Just as they don't really miss Randle El much.

A tall receiver would be nice, but they need an OLine and a DLine first.

Don't even get me started on what teams need...

My team is Baltimore... yes, we've won a Superbowl, but we have drastic changes ahead of us this year... a coach being just one of them.

Oh yeah, hahahahah Pats lost... best betting game ever. I had the Giants on 12 points... who seriously wouldn't take that line?

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
