Suggest me an Iron set

Well now that I have the newbie status away I can make the post I came for.

Well, I usually play a max of 5-8 rounds a year and shooting best rounds in high 80's. Im currently using 10 year old Pinnacle irons which I can only imagine how much they hold me back.

I am 6'2'' 205 and my swing generates a lot of club head speed. The irons I have now hit straight but when Im off the slightest they aren't very forgiving. I hope I dont come off as a hack, but the people Im paired up with say I have potential but the 100 yard and in game needs improvement.

Im looking to buy new/used in the 400 range. I plan on playing every weekend and entering some amateur local tournaments to throw myself into the fire with. I appreciate any suggestions.

i'm a titleist guy, although your build sounds alot like my dads, and he really likes his callaway x14's (hes just your one weekend a month golfer). maybe check those out used, and he hits them pretty good for only being a every now and then golfer (shoots mid to low 80s)

Funny you mention that, from the quick research I was looking at the x18's. Im also trying to enter the at minimum once a week golfer realm now that Im done with school.

The new Wilson club sets can be had brand new for $500, and you can find last year's models in great shape at the $300 range...The Pi5 and Di6 sets are really oustanding for the money.

I wouldnt get anything too high price seeing as you only golf 5-8 rounds a year. I definatly suggest something from wilson also.

I would definately recommend the X18's or the Ping Gs.

Both are great Game Improvement irons, but will give you the freedom to continue using them as you develop.

Mind telling us what your current irons set is? Whatever that is, I think your irons are fine (for someone who plays 5-8 rounds a year). What you need is to take lessons on the short game and keep practicing it yourself. Perhaps you'll be needing new wedges that will help you in 100 yards and less. Combining those two aspects (and also putting) you'll shave off your handicap big time.

But if you insist on getting new irons, I'd go against the majority and recommend you to get a more challenging set of irons. Since you've said you're going to enter a local tourney I'm sure you'll be needing that consistency in ball striking. To do that you need to find less forgiving clubs and of course a lot of practice on the (grass) range regardless to your rounds per year. Why less forgiving clubs? Let's put this way, challenging clubs give you more room to grow which means you'll sharpen your skill using those (although it's more difficult). Figuratively if you're a chess player, playing against more skilled player will increase your skill and experience although you won't always win. Now if you played against less skilled players, what did you get out of it? Though you'll win most of the time you'll still be that same exact player with nothing to gain. Nothing has improved within you. The worst thing that could happen is your skill will eventually become dull. Golf is really tough and in order to be competitive, I honestly think you should improve on your skills to stay in the game rather than using easy clubs. Hope this helps.

agree with this statement to an extent. if your hackin at a 20 handicap or so, blades are pretty much meaningless to you, you are only hurting yourself. However, I noticed in HS i was a 8 handicap, and now over 6-7 months, I have lowered it 2 strokes because I switched to blades. Blades are great to take you to the next level,

if you are ready for it. if not, then your not not having fun. And unless your in competitive golf, that is what it is all about.

I want to recommend a set of clubs that will leave you amazed. The original Adams Tight Lies Irons with the bimatrix shaft---These irons are soo forgiving and plus they may be the longest irons ever produced because of how light weight they are. They;re like 50 bucks a set on EBAY

I really like this idea. I played sports throughout college and high school and I consider myself super competitive. I meant I played 5-8 rounds in prior years. This year I plan to play at the very least once a week. I imagine you're leaning towards a blade set, can you recommend any?

PING 10 Series. I or G depending on your preference. I know they aren't the prettiest thing on things on the planet, buy my LORD are they butter!

You can go into the used section and find some great deals on all kinds of clubs. I was in the golf repair shop and saw some gems. Since you mentioned your game 100 yards and in, I would start off with some decent wedges.

try the callaway x20's

I suggest you find a range that has a vast amount of demo clubs and that can set you up to a launch monitor. Also, see if you can mix and match shafts and clubheads.

I've hit many sets that came out 1-2 years ago and I think they've dropped down in price.

I currently own Cleveland CG4s and I like them but here are some sets that I've hit at a shop and kind of wished I got instead:

Ping i5
Ping i10 (Edit: the 10s are all new)
Ping G10s are nice too but the soles are a bit too wide for my liking
Callaway X20 (shafts only come in Uniflex I think)
Taylormade R7

Don't get me wrong, the CG4s are really nice, forgiving, and soft, but I'd feel the sets listed above would be more consistent and they feel great.

100 yard game needs work? Unless you get paid to play...everyone does!

I would suggest a 50 or 52 degree wedge with "maybe" 8 degrees of bounce...learn to love it for all shots. within 100 yds.

If you want new sticks, you can't go wrong w/the Callaway X-18's or the new X-20's. However, an even better choice, IMHO, especially if you want to stay around that $400.00 range, would be a set of Ping Eye 2's from ebay. They would be a very worthwhile investment, no doubt. They are by far my favorite irons ever, and I have played Power Built's, i3's, Big Bertha's, G2's, and, most recently, Titleist 775's. Nothing matches the feel, sound, and most important, the results, of the Ping Eye 2. Some people have a hang up with how old they are. Since you are already coming from an older set, you might not want another older set of sticks. But, no matter how you look at it, they are a great set of clubs. They are the most forgiving, most workable, and best looking club ever made. They look more classic than anything you can buy today,and they are still, after all the developments in technology, the best. You can't go wrong w/ the Callaway's either, but I LOVE THE EYE 2!!!
