I just went through their site and did the breakdown to what color dot I should go with. It ended up suggesting White Dots.

The current set I use is standard and it contacts the ground from 1/4" off center towards the heel all the way through the toe.

This seems like a drastic lie change from standard...what are your takes? Is the chart pretty spot on?

Im 6'2'' and wrist to floor is 36.75

I would suggest going to a shop and hitting off an "impact board" ( or whatever they call it), and let them suggest a "color" for you. Ive had 3 sets of Pings, and so much of the "color" you need is determined by your swing path.

Here is a bizarre, but true, example....

When I first got fitted, my swing was very upright, my attack angle very steep, and i hit a lot of shots right....so the fitted me with an "upright" club (white dot). I took some lessons, worked hard on improving my swing path, and a year later, I was fitted as an "orange dot". Thats a shift from a very upright swing to a very flat swing. 18 months later, I wsa ready to upgrade again - got fitted, and this time I was a "black" dot - which is standard lie and loft...

BTW, Im 5'11", about as average as it gets...

I think as far as the lie angle it is. I am 5'11" and 35" from wrist to floor. It said I was Blue (1.o up) and I was fitted by a Titleist rep at 2.o up. So, if anything, Ping was more conservative than Titleist.

My worry, especially on the older Ping models, is the shaft length. The eye 2, for example, is about 1/2" shorter (standard) than most irons today. I don't know if that is still the case or not.

Either way, I think that their system seems fairly accurate. But, if a club fitter will fit you for free (most will at local clubs, etc) it still is worth having a look.

So best case scenario would be to get the black dots and just get them adjusted? Theres a place within 10 miles that is on the Ping site as a club fitter.

At 6'2", I would skew toward the more "upright" colors.

When you miss, do you miss right or left ? Do you tend to hook a lot of iron shots, or push more of them ?

No, actually, best case would be to go there and get fitted first. If you don't want to do that then follow the web fitting at least a little. I am 5'11". You are 6'2" and your arm is 1 3/4" longer than mine. I was fit as either 1 or 2 degrees upright my self, depending on the company. So, unless you hit your irons like Golham from Lord of t he Rings, all hunched over, then, at the very least you would be green. The most you should ever have a club bent is 2.o. So if you get black and find out that Ping was right, you will be stuck. I would get fit first. If not, go w/ the green or white dot. I seriously doubt you are a black. (If you like the black color and white or green doesn't match your stuff, paint over it. That would be better than hitting clubs that are too down.) Good luck.

When I miss I hook the ball with my longer irons.

It could be swing mechanics, but it could be too upright of a club. Maybe go in between. Get a Blue or Green dot. But, you are not Black.

I think you're right, its more of an issue of turning my hands over too much at impact. Thanks for the advice.

I had white dot G2's, but found a bit too upright, and was missing too much to the right. I bought i10's and went down to a blue dot and I like them better. I'm 6'2" so have them an inch over length and mid size grips with two extra wraps for my hand size. Definitely go to the Ping club fitter and hit off the lie board and get him to a static fit. It's well worth it from my experience.

My web fit says that I'm a white dot, but when I was fitted on the range, I came up as a silver dot (4 deg. upright) and +1" shafts. I'm 6' 2" and can't remember my wrist to floor. At any rate, my G10s are amazing for me, and I have faith in PING irons.

I would suggest going to a shop and hitting off an "impact board" ( or whatever they call it), and let them suggest a "color" for you. Ive had 3 sets of Pings, and so much of the "color" you need is determined by your swing path.

I went through nearly the same exact thing. When I first started playing I had a much steeper, "chop down" type swing. As lessons, many rounds and practice have proved my swing began leveling out making my former "custom" clubs perfect to actually hindering my performance.

I've had 9 sets of irons in the past 10 years and would highly recommend seeing a reputable fitter when it comes to everything you are looking for out of your clubs. You won't believe the difference both in how well the clubs will form to your mechanics or how confident you'll feel when you step up to every shot.

On the static fitting I was a perfect black dot, everything standard etc. I'm right at 6'0 or so, and arm legnth like 33.5ish? maybe 34. Once I was hitting impact tape, it was pretty obvious I needed to be at least 1 degree flat (red), but with the new color system a 1.5 (purple) degree flat is perfect for me. So definitely take like 15 minutes and hit the irons with impact tape and see where you need to be. I thought the black dot was perfect for me, but I was clearly wrong. Going and getting my irons adjusted tomorrow.

I am 6'2" with a 36.75" wrist to floor. I was fitted with a white dot i10's and +1/2" on the shaft length. A few days ago I went for a follow up fitting and the lie angle looked right for me.

I also tried a web fit and the only difference was green dot instead of white.

I am loving the new i10's!

I definately think it is worthwhile. I am green dot. Professional fitting is the best but the ping web fit is normally fairly accurate and is a good option for people purchasing 2nd hand pings.

My experience with Pings (i'm 6'1", 36.5) is the web fit was perfectly suitable.

My club pro is of similar build and he recommended Blue dot (+0.75) and 1/4 inch longer. He himself always goes for Black dot (+0) and 1/4 inch longer - he likes the natural draw it gives him.

My previous non-Ping non-fitted irons were shorter and flatter so i had to adjust my swing to hit the Pings - now I hit it better, straighter and more consistently.

I believe the colour system simply tells you what lenght and lie angle would best suit someone of your height if you address the ball at the normal/conventional position - i.e. standard width in your stance, standard flex in the knees, standard angle of your back, standard distance of the club from your waist...etc. So if you are doing any of these slightly differently you alter your height/distance from hands to ground.

I try to work on getting all of the above to a normal level so the Ping colour system will fit me correctly. I think the Ping system is very good but it has its limitations - get fit correctly i reckon!

  • 3 weeks later...
I took a lesson and the pro had me swing my 5 iron onto the board and they bent it gradually until I was hitting square. They bent it upright 4 degrees, which agrees with my PING static fitting of std length, silver (5-11, short arms so 37.5" wrist to floor).

So, there is something to the dots...but...

I think he thought I would go back to them to pay to have the rest of my clubs bent, but I am cheap and never went back. So I have been playing with mostly 4 degree flat clubs, doing well sometimes. But I have been terribly inconsistent, and I sometimes feel like I am bending over too much to address the ball, and I think I need to get the rest of the clubs bent.
