It would appear that Justin Leonard is attempting to prove you wrong. At least so far in 2008.

Baker-Finch apparently went through a wanted swing change after his Open win, and then had the yips on the green after that. Go figure.
Ian Baker-Finch
What the hell happened there? He was always a great player with a sound swing, wins the Open in 1991 and then couldn't hit a cow's backside with a banjo after that![/quote]

How about making the generalization that any player labeled by an in-the-booth analyst as someone who "we should be expecting great things from" or "his run of good play should open the floodgates from here" can instantly be sentenced to MIA status (see Chris Riley, Sean O'Hair, Matt Gogel, fill in your own candidate). It seems like it is the kiss of death.

My vote goes to another injury-plagued player-Scott Hoch. I think he's playing the Champions Tour now. He had a slew of funky injuries including a failed laser eye surgery if I recall correctly. He still ranks 19th on the career $$ list.

Verplank has long been one of my favorites... really gutty player. But he's been plagued by injuries throughout his career. That he's a pretty severe diabetic (type 1, juvenile, the worst), I don't think he's going to have the same career in his 40's as Vijay. That takes it toll on its sufferers over time. That said, he's something like -3 in the first round of the AP Invitational.

Well and truly slumped into oblivion:

Bill Rogers
Won the 1981 Open, looked to be a superstar but failed to live up to his major success.

Paul Way
He looked destined to be European golf's next bight thing. He played in two Ryder Cups, in 1983 and 1985, the later being one of the stars of the tournament and had an outstanding record in those two matche,s with a record of of six wins, two losses and one halved match. But yet he faded away without ever reaching his full potential.
