  1. Premium shafts cost more because of the RnD, materials, and the standard to which they are manufactured (Japan vs. China usually). The last 1% in performance gains always cost more to attain/obtain than the first 99%. A corvette z06 and a ferrari f430 both go 0-60 in~3.8 seconds and both have a top speed of ~200 mph. The F430 costs 4 times as much but does not perform 4 times better. Ferrari handles better, stops better, and is built far more like a race-car though while the z06 is built like a sports car. Plus it is a Ferrari. Thus the quadrupled price tag. Feel, dispersion, LA/spin (bend profile), torque, and yes the brand all affect price. Brand is not just a name painted on, some brands have tighter tolerances. I would be willing to bet that if you got 10 Ad Di 6s from graphite design and tested the CPM, weight, bend profile, torque etc they would be much closer to being the same than if you got a made for "insert OEM" shaft and tested 10 of them. A small increase in performance might not be worth it if you are a 25 handicap but once you start getting around par it is harder and harder to shave strokes. It is much, much easier to spend money and save a stroke every other round than to get up and down 1 more time every other round. Also, I think a 10000$ shaft that gave a 25% distance increase would sell like hotcakes if it wasn't made illegal right away. I would pay 10000 to go from 270 to 340. The hard part would be affording the divorce afterwards.
  2. You can't tell swingspeed accurately through a youtube video I'm sorry. I believe people who say they can tell ss based on video less than I do people who say they swing 125 on the internet. THere are guys that make 125-130 look effortless and without seeing the ball fly you would never tell. This is worse than people arguing over the size of a fish in a picture.
  3. if you are spending that much time playing/practicing I don't see why you wouldn't get a good new/used set. If you get fitted that is always good especially at your height. Getting new clubs will give you confidence and also (should) remove all those thoughts in the back of your mind that it might be the clubs costing you some strokes/distance. Like Willie Malay said you will probly see a distance increase because of stronger lofts. If you can get on the path to releasing the club properly that will be the best way to improve both distance and consistency.
  4. That sounds like a good combo and glad it is working for you.
  5. Yes it is the height of the face. Generally deep face launches lower and spins less and shallow face will have high launch and spin. 3 woods that are deeper faced are harder to hit off the deck but can add some distance and forgiveness off the tee due to less spin and higher COR (trampoline effect). SHallow face is generally easier off the deck but not as much distance due to launch and spin (different for slow swingers but this is the internet so I'll skip it). The trend by OEM's is to make fairway woods that go further. They do that by making deeper face (also speed slot to add COR) and a longer shaft, both tweaks make the club harder to hit off the ground.
  6. I don't know how long his driver is or how it is measured. I think its 48 or 50. I'm pretty sure he swings 120+ when playing competitive golf. I was trying to make the point that you have no clue how fast a guy is swinging based on an internet video. Yes the OP has major swing flaws. Obviously he could gain more through lessons and practice but so could any amateur golfer. Why does anyone care if he actually swings 125 or not. Fact is performance gains can be made through equipment. The OP wants to buy a $200 driver that will fit a 125 mph swing so he asked for some advice. He is not marrying this shaft. If he makes a swing change he can buy a new shaft to fit his new swing.
  7. that is not me. That is a video from Monte Scheinblum's blog. He was long drive champion in 1992. He put up 3 drives over 400 yards this last weekend in the competition in the senior division. He is a similar sized person to the OP and that swing was around 130 mph from what I gather from his blog.
  8. DO you have radar vision? I don't know how you tell how fast he is swinging. How fast is this guy swinging?
  9. I dont think it is a bad idea for him to try a heavy, short (45" or under if he does it right) stiff enough for his swing driver. If he gets all 3 of those his dispersion should tighten up quite a bit. I don't know his misses or swing but if it is near sound he should be able to tighten it up. I played i15 with stock avixcore(60 some gram) that would be all over the place and balloon. I got an i20 witha ad bb7x at 45" got it tipped to 44.5" and it is almost automatic. Aim down left center and swing. It is just stiff enough to leak right on standard swing and I get a 1 yard fade when I really step on it with piercing trajectory. I don't swing as hard as this guy (110-115 on course I think) Carry it about 260 add on whatever roll I can get. (I know that seems short for the internet). If he gets a 80 gram ust or protoPYPE and tips it properly and plays it 44.5 inches I think he can swing away. Although he still has to hit his irons and putt. a 200 yard shot is a 200 yard shot I don't care if you get to hit a 7 iron or a 3 iron the difference in difficulty is closer than everyone thinks.
  10. Its all about preference really. Some people like hybrids some like woods. I have a 13 degree 3 wood and a 18 degree hybrid. I could probly get rid of either my 3 or 4 iron as my yardages bunch up a little bit. 2 hybrid goes about 205-210 3 iron 195ish 4 iron 185 ish.
  11. Get the ones off Craig list. use the gift cards for balls, gloves maybe a spiffy orange Puma HAt.
  12. Aldila ProtoPYPE 80x tip it like 1/2-1 inch. Angel Cabrera used that for a while including when he won the US open(not sure if it was the 80x exactly). It is a very stiff shaft for hard swingers like you. CHoose whatever head you like. That shaft is like 70 bucks new on the bay.
  13. The monitor always says I hit a draw but I almost never hit a draw on the course/range.
  14. A driver is like a pair of shoes. Find one that fits you and you don't mind looking at in your bag.
