Yes, too close. You're not going anywhere, they're going to be ahead of you and they are likely waiting for others. Just wait it out if you're unsure. I'm always annoyed when someone hits into me, even if the shot falls 20 yards short. 20 yards isn't really that far. I know I've overshot targets by 20 yards.

Concentrate on your short game and keep playing. While it's different for everyone, I found that my chipping game is where I made up my strokes. Once I (more consistently) got inside of 5 feet, it made the difference.

Only once, and it was more for self-preservation. Saw a grizzly bear on the course wading in a water hazard. My partner and I backed away slowly and ran once we were out of sight warning everyone behind us. I'd never been that scared in my life.
