  1. I never get mad at the golf course! Unless of course its not being maintained well and costs me strokes. I do however get upset with myself when I play poorly. However, I can handle a couple double bogeys and just try to make up for them. Its the triples and back to back to back doubles that get to me. I don't do much when I get frustrated I just usually ditch the score card and then focus on practice. Ive never yelled, thrown a club, slammed one in the bag, smashed the ground. None of that, I simply just get frustrated. Usually results in a day or two break from anything related to golf, then I practice a lot to try to get better and work through whatever was causing my poor round.
  2. Hey all. So I just got fitted into some new irons. I am running stiff DG300's 3-PW with an extra inch and a quarter of length to account for my being tall. This length softens the flex slightly. Here's the question, after spending a load of cash on new irons I really need to take a break from buying new clubs. I would love a new wedge but financially I really shouldn't go for it. So I am stuck with my regular flex Tom Watson 56 degree 11bounce sand wedge (it is an inch long so plays slightly softer than regular). Will this difference in flex between my irons and SW be very noticeable to my shot dispersion with the SW? I feel like it wont be a problem with chip shots because of how short the shaft is and because most shots with the SW wont be exactly full swings. Also, I would love a lob wedge but probably won't be getting one for some months due to the same reason. Could I play the SW like a lob by just opening up the club face a bit at address? Likewise, could I play my PW like a GW simply by opening up the face?
  3. I wish I could say the same about my local range! Those mats are nasty, I know many others experience a similar issue. I am sure it is a mat quality issue!
  4. Hey all, just thought I would share a quick tip and trick I discovered from hitting off of mats last summer. I noticed that when I hit off of mats in the drizzling rain that I didn't get any of that green plastic mess on the bottom of my club, so I thought why not just put a bit of water on the mat when it is sunny. Sure enough, an ounce or two of water put on the range mat (where you strike) will prevent the plastic from adhering to your iron soles! Another thing I discovered. Prius floor mats make superb hitting surfaces. They have rubber spikes on the bottom to keep the mat from moving on the turf, mat, soil etc, and the synthetic material doesn't stick to your club or scratch them. You can also see where your divots are! Cheers!
  5. Second favorite was my first birdie last spring. 140 yards downhill easy 8 iron. Put it 2 feet from the pin thought I was going to hole it!
  6. My most memorable was last season at my little par 3 course. On the longest hole 205 yards slight uphill, I pulled out my 4 hybrid and let it rip. Shot it straight as could be and could hear is sizzle through the air. Put it 3 feet from the pin. That was the only time ive ever gotten on the green in 1 for that hole. Messed up the put but I didn't care the tee shot was so satisfying!
  7. I played when I was really young only a handful of times and I was absolutely terrible, never took scores. I gave up until I took the game up fall of 2012 at which point I started to keep score and actually play by the rules. At that point I was playing a cheap 150 dollar set from amazon, probably averaged 110 strokes+ per game. Last summer I bought a boxed set of Adams tight lies and really started to play and enjoy the game. I played 1-2 times a week and went to the range at least once. I started recording my swing and watching tons of videos (I am 21 now btw), this allowed me to learn pretty quick. I started last season shooting that 110 that I ended on in 2012, and I finished out last season averaging low-mid 90's. My best score last season was roughly bogey golf 88 (playing 9 holes, scaled to 18). My first round this season a few weeks ago playing that first first round with my new custom fit irons, I shot 36 on a tough par 3. Granted I had been to the range 4 times before I played. I really hope this is a good sign for the season(s) to come my goal is to get down to 80 this season. So to answer your question, yes you can definitely get better. The key is to become a student of the game. Watch the golf channel, perfect your swing, watch instructional videos, get fit to some clubs once you get a consistent swing down! Playing pretty good golf should be completely possible for you.
  8. I certainly can hit the ball pretty far, but my dispersion drops fast when I am really going for it. I usually hit with a nice mellow controlled swing at pretty average distance or perhaps even on the lower end, my 7iron usually goes 140-150 carry + role. 3 iron usually about 200-210 with nice solid strike. Longer irons are available for tall golfers, I was fit at about 1.5" over standard length clubs (effectively makes the shaft play softer). I prefer +1.25 with stiff steel shafts, and play DG300's. The longer shaft also effectively makes the lie more upright by about 2degrees, but I need an even more upright lie so I have my irons bent an additional 2 up. This gives me a nice solid contact with the ground. Oh ya and I have to use jumbo sized grips or I end up hurting my hands/wrists haha. Being tall definitely can make it tough to get set up with the correct equipment as well as expensive. But I love the game and actually kind of enjoy the fitting process, it gives me more confidence! Nice to meet you by the way!
  9. I am working on consistency with my irons. I have dropped the woods and driver from the bag because they don't fit me, I am terrible with them and I sacrifice strokes with them. I decided I should work on what I am pretty good at (ball striking) and develop my swing through iron play. I upgraded my iron equipment to a set of Mizuno's and got appropriately fit to them (dropped strokes off my game immediately). I am 6 foot 7 inches tall so fitting was a must. When I am confident with my irons and have more money, ill get fit for a long 2hybrid and driver of which I will add to the bag. Until then ill be laying it up and focusing on: Specifics -figure out my yardage gaps and be able to select the appropriate club for the job -get my normal swing dialed in so I can repeat swing after swing to hit my gaps consistently. -develop an easy swing and a harder swing so I can vary from my normal yardage gaps slightly if need be (only after I master my normal gaps). -decrease dispersion -get better at fades and more specifically draws -relax at address and swing through the ball and stop trying to hit the ball -stop coming over the top on my downswing -take divots more consistently I feel that I should be able to achieve these goals by the end of this season. Then this winter ill add my longer clubs and work on them over winter. I think by next season I should be able to have my handicap dropped by a good amount!
  10. I shot 36 at my local 9 hole par 3 today! Only 1 stroke above my personal best. Not the greatest score but hey, I was pumped. Course was absolutely saturated and muddy as heck so I feel like I played a great game! Also got to use my new mizuno irons for the first time and loved them!
  11. Hello all! The names will, I am from Washington State. When I am at school (College) I play a regular length 9 hole course. Its reasonably cheap and I get plenty of practice and enjoyment there. While at home for the summer I usually play a very technical 9 hole par 3, also cheap. I love the feel of my mizuno mp54 irons! Been golfing for a little over a year and really have come to love the game. I currently have roughly a 20 handicap, although my best score ever was 8 over on a 9 hole course. Today I played for the first time of the season with my new irons and shot 9 over on that little par 3. I was ecstatic to say the least! I love golf, love talking golf and forums! Cheers and good luck this season!
