  2. The old saying of you can't outtrain a bad diet. I would say the title may be misleading, working out helps, but it's the not the be all end all of weight loss. Plenty of people went old school Atkins/Keto diets and lost a ton of weight and workouts aren't always required for a keto diet to work depending on severity of obesity.
  3. Just started and I ended up with Callaway Strata set, but replaced my irons with Big Bertha irons and my wedge is a Titlest, with a Taylormade Putter (really want a Cameron though). Once I get better and can justify spending money on a higher priced set I plan on going with whatever I think looks good.
  4. Played my first 18 hole course (Firewheel Golf Park-Old Course Garland, TX) yesterday and loved it. Shot a 107 for my first official round. I think I'm hooked on managed 18 hole courses with golf carts, it was a freaking blast.
  5. Played my first full 18 yesterday after only playing 9 hole courses. I'm hooked even more on this game now. I had some abysmally awful shots but I also had some pretty decent shots that made me feel pretty good about things. There's nothing like unleashing the driver right down the fairway on a par 5 hole and just watching it sail, or hitting a solid iron shot from the fairway to land on the green, man it was awesome. I ended up with a 107, 2 lost balls and didn't take any extra shots or mulligans. Worst hole was a 10, I really need to focus on pitching and getting it on the green without skulling the ball because I raise up to see where it goes before I hit it. So thanks to you guys for helping me out on my swing and for getting me rolling in the right direction.
  6. This is where I am. I just started the game about 3 weeks ago and played my first 18 yesterday. There were holes where I should have carded a par, or bogey but instead because I'm really bad at chipping (and mostly everything else at this point), I could have erased a few strokes by being able to chip on to the green. I skulled so many chip shots yesterday it was frustrating seeing the ball go from one side of the green to another, still not on the green. Was a huge learning experience but really frustrating knowing I could have shot better than 107 on my first round.
  7. As far as it being expensive, I just put together an outfit on eBay for $30.46, including shipping. It's a Reebok golf polo and Ben Hogan shorts. You can find golf polo's for $9 a piece, so the whole expensive argument is kind of invalid.
  8. I'm with @mcanadiens when it comes to country clubs vs municipal courses. Around here it's similar. People at municipal courses try to at least wear collared shirts. I've only actually played our local 9 hole executive course but even there people typically wear collared shirts during the round. As a newbie I'm still just trying to fit in, so figured my dress shorts and a polo suffice. Still don't bother tucking it in though.
  9. I just read through that and thought that makes total sense to me. Especially the "don't take it to the next shot" concept. Just started playing, and I can be hot headed when things don't go my way, golf is teaching me in fact that it's not a game of perfect, and you have to learn and adjust as you go. I'd say pre-shot is mighty important, but now I'm questioning whether I may find the post-shot a bit more important, especially for newer players who need to take time and evaluate every movement of their shots and the result, and how to correct/cement that technique.
  10. As a new player I've found my grip pressure to be too loose at times, the club shifts in my hands at the top and causes a slice. I've had to firm up my grip a bit, but still remind myself I'm not trying to ring it's neck to keep my wrists loose and able to hinge properly.
  11. I wanna play an entire round without losing a ball, and maybe play my first 18 hole course before the end of the year if I feel ready.
  12. As a new player, I had no idea really what to expect at the range. Here in TX, the range I go to most often is pretty secluded, it's a 9 hole executive course. Most people there wear shorts of some kind and anywhere from polo shirts to sleeveless dri-fit shirts. I usually wear khaki non cargo shorts, and a tshirt if I'm just on the range after work, or a collared shirt if I'm going to play a round. I actually just ordered 5 collared "golf" shirts because I wanted to at least look the part (tucking it in will be a different story since it'll come untucked my first few swings). What's the opinion on tucked in shirts? If I start out tucked but it comes out, do I need to keep tucking it in as I go? Or just not worry about it and let it go.
  13. So here's my week 2 swing, trying to keep that elbow in more and not coming down on top of the ball so much. I personally think its better, but still not great. My mobility is causing some issues, so with the continued weight loss and stretching eventually should get in line, as long as I don't cement bad habits. I did have some "ah-ha!" moments on the range today when it came to feeling that pure ball strike and seeing it just jump off the club face for long flight. Thanks for the help going through this before. Putting up my swing next to Kevin Stadler's swing really made me stop and reevaluate who I was looking at trying to compare my swing to.
  14. Thanks so much. I'm gonna put this in to practice tomorrow at the range. I think this will greatly help my problem with hitting down on the ball and not getting behind it.
  15. I've been Playing Golf for: 1 Week My current handicap index or average score is: N/A. I've only played a 9 hole course and shot a 42. My typical ball flight is: High The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Right now I'm really trying to focus on a good ball strike with my irons. I don't worry so much about drivers just yet, I'd like to establish a solid mid and short game first. Most of my iron shots are straight, with the occasional pull, and every now and then I'll hit a good hook shot. Videos:
