Eagles Golf: Lakes

Posted

Pros: Brand new Carts, new paving

Cons: Still some work to be done

While this is my first review of the Eagles, I've played both of their courses (they offer the Lakes and the Forest), multiple times.  Years ago I used to play a 9-hole league here after work.  I've always been a fan of the course, but always thought that the pricing was a tad bit steep.  Currently their rates run between $30-$45 depending on time (3pm+ drops a bit more).  That's not expensive for this time of year, but the rates may not reflect typical right now.  I say that because the course has recently undergone a management change.  It is possible that the rates are artificially low right now to encourage play until the new management feels it has...

Silver Springs Shores CC

Pros: Great shape, interesting course

Cons: Greens had just been aerated

I played this course this past Saturday with my dad while visiting for father's day.  Probably the nicest course I've played in the Ocala area so far, though the Golf Club of Ocala is right up there with it when it comes to condition and is just a shade less expensive.  Very interesting course with some great choices to make.  The Par 4 third gives you the option of cutting the water to go straight for the green. For the moment I highly advise against this as there is a nesting gator living on the hole and the area to the right of the green (nearest the water) is roped off. The gator recently chased someone off the green, so better to just lay up and take a nice...

Ping G5I Anser

Posted

Pros: Great looking, great feeling putter

Cons: A bit pricey when new

My wonderful wife picked this up for me a few years back and it has never left my bag.  It replaced an Odyssey I had picked up used when working at a PlayItAgain when I was in college.  Never had a problem with the Odyssey, but this Ping just felt RIGHT in my hands.  I tend to prefer the more classic style putters.  Never beeen a big fan of mallets and the crazy shapes that can be found on many a putter out there right now.  Obviously putters are an incredibly individual choice in the game of golf, and this one fit me to a tee (pun intended).

Countryway Executive

Posted

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Greens currently in HORRIBLE condition

Countryway Golf Club is an executive course with a decent number of par 4's sprinkled in with some distance.  The total yardage runs just over 3500 yards from the blues.  Most of the par 3's are short, but there are one or two sprinkled in at close to 200 yards.  The longest par 4 is 375 yards from the blues.  There is plenty of water throughout the course to invite your balls for a swim and a good number of traps are used to guard the greens in case you feel like a day at the beach.  The sand within the traps I found myself in seemed in decent shape with the exception of one where the drainage wasn't up to snuff, leaving the center of the trap more like...

Wonderful facility

Pros: Amazing courses, aweseome practice facility

Cons: Pricey

The price and date I've noted are estimates.  I played one of the two 18 hole courses at Orange County National quite a few years back.  It was an outing set up by a 9-hole company league I was playing in.  I've been jonesing to get back there ever since.  Hopefully I will be able to put together a much more detailed review in the near future by visiting again, but I couldn't believe there were no reviews of this course.  Simply awesome, if you are in the area, make it a point to play here.

Good Value

Pros: Inexpensive, well kept up

Pine Oaks used to be part of a two course municipal set up that included Ocala Golf Club.  In the past year, Pine Oaks was leased to another company so it is no longer, technically, a muni.  The course also used to consist of 3-4 9 hole layouts, but has now been paired down to one 18 hole track with a series of practice holes and a disc golf lay out.  Fair warning, this can play havoc with some of the GPS systems out there if they aren't udpated as they will want to switch to one of the multiple layouts that used to be valid, but are no longer.   The course was in great shape when I played it this last weekend.  The fairways were nice and the greens...

ALMOST cheap enough...

Posted

Pros: Greens in good shape, inexpensive

Cons: Fairways in rough shape, overall shape of course

Of the courses I've played in Ocala, this one ranks at the bottom so far.  It is inexpensive enough (currently $20 before 8 am with a twilight rate of $12), but I wouldn't pay more than that under any circumstances.  I certainly wouldn't pay the $1800 they want for a yearly membership.  One would be much better off with a membership at the Golf Club of Ocala, the local muni.  While the greens were in decent shape, the overall state of the course is fairly poor.  Weedy and just in general rough.  The best description I could come up with in my head was "country shape".   The above may sound overly harsh.  It is not the worst course I've...

Great irons

Posted

Pros: Beautiful look, forgiving

Cons: Shows wear pretty quickly

I picked these up a couple of weeks back via an open-box deal at GlobalGolf.com.  Great price for the clubs, though I got closer to retail after having them fit.  I love the look of these clubs.  I'm glad to see more companies start coming out with the black look to irons, it just fits my tastes perfectly.  The clubs are defintely much more forgiving than the last set of clubs I had (Nicklaus all-in-one set bought 5-6 years ago).  Being such a high-handicapper, it is nice to have a club that can save me from myself now and then, which these seemed to do on more than one occasion during my first couple of rounds.

Beautiful course

Posted

Pros: Gorgeous course, well maintained, friendly staff

Cons: Somewhat pricey for the budget golfer, beware the water

I played this course with a friend visiting from California recently.  It's a bit of a trek for me and I otherwise may never have played here.  The course is set inside a high-end community with beautiful homes and appears to be a semi-private club.  There is a nice range set up next to the club house and at least when I was there a cart girl was continually running carts out to arriving players, great service.  Pricing was a bit steep for me (I'm a budget golfer at this point), but using one of the popular online booking sites the cost was more reasonable at just over $50.  Full price ran closer to $90.  Current rates can be found on their website...

A well maintained bargain!

Posted

Pros: Well maintained, pleasant staff, inexpensive

Cons: None that I can think of

I play this course quite a bit as my father lives nearby and frequents the course.  It is probably the best kept municipal course I've ever come across. It is always in impeccable shape and the staff is great. I've played in the summer and during the busy season and while there is a significant difference, the course does not get anywhere near as crowded as those in Tampa. A great bargain.
