Cobra Golf Releases Pro MB and Pro CB Irons

Think Cobra Golf doesn’t have irons for you better golfers? Think again.

Bag DropUp to this point, nothing in the current irons lineup from the folks at Cobra Golf did much for me as they seemed to fit more in the game improvement category and were also a bit “busy” looking for my taste.

With input gathered from their Tour staff, we now have some irons for the better golfer in mind with the introduction of the Pro CB and Pro MB irons. These new additions look more up my alley. I’m not saying I’m good enough to play either, but they pass my “do they look nice” test.

Just how good are these new offerings? JB Holmes used a set of Pro CBs to win the FBR Open (hitting over 70% of greens in regulation) and Geoff Ogilvy used a set of Pro MBs to win the WGC-CA Championship (and was #1 in GIR) just a couple of weeks ago. I would say these new irons are off to a pretty great start.

Let’s take a look.

Pro CB Irons
The new Pro CB irons are a cavity-back model that moves weight behind the hitting area to give you a more solid feel while still allowing you to work the ball. They are forged from 1020 carbon steel which provides a “soft, solid, and powerful feel” and have a thin topline, minimal offset a narrow sole and a “round sole camber” to give help players better turf interaction. The shortened hosel also lowers the center of gravity for a higher launch trajectory.

Cobra Pro CB Iron

The Pro CB come standard with the Royal Precision Project X 5.5 shaft and and a 3-PW set will carry a suggested retail price of $1,049 with a street price of about $850 (2 iron and approach/gap wedge available for $105/club) and will be available in April.

I must say that the Pro CBs look pretty nice and I like the fact they are plain with no fancy colors or decals. I’m not sure how forgiving these are or whether they are beyond my playing ability but that doesn’t mean I won’t be checking them out once they hit my local golf shop.

Pro MB Irons
The new irons are muscle-back models for the better golfer and like the Pro CB line are forged from 1020 carbon steel for that “soft, solid, and powerful feel.” With input from the Cobra Tour staff, the Pro MB have a longer hosel to give you more ball control and a “mid-launch” center of gravity as well as a thin topline, minimal offset, and the “same round sole camber” as the Pro CB’s to help on with turf interaction.

Cobra Pro MB Iron

The Pro MB come standard with True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 steel shafts and a 3-PW set will carry a suggested retail price of $1,049 for a 3-PW set with a street price of about $850 (2 iron and approach/gap wedge are available for $106/club) and will be available in April.

These I have no business messing with (I know my limitations!) but they still look pretty nice and I’ll be interested to hear from you readers who are good enough to play a muscle-back style iron to get your thoughts.

In the End
Other than the amusing David Feherty commercials, I haven’t given Cobra Golf much of a look in the past few years. Oh, I’ve tried a few of their drivers but have passed on their irons for quite some time now.

I’m not sure if I’ve got the game yet to try out a “players” cavity back (and I can’t anyway since it’s snowing as I write this) but I may just have to give these a test run once I can demo clubs outside, which at this rate will be May.

  1. These irons are probably a bit beyond me, but I must say that from an aesthetic sense, they are very attractive in the same way that the Mizuno MP line is, especially, to my eye the MP 57s.

Over the past three years, I have really gained a respect for Cobra’s breadth of product. With the exception of their putters, with which I have no experience, I have seen many people play their different products: drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons, as well as the children’s clubs.

I have owned three Cobra drivers and currently have several Cobra DWS hybrids in my bag. I have always been pleased with their quality and performance.

Cobra has really become a force in the golf industry and, I, for one, am very impressed with the company.

  2. Two words for ya: “Niice, niiiiiiiiicccceeeee”. I hit the CB on demo days. They were butta. I can’t wait to hit the MB.

  3. Mixed messages here. Pro. Muscleback. etc. But they still have a 46 degree pitching wedge.

That’s a 9I from just a couple of iterations in the marketing cycle ago.

    Lucky there’s a 50d gap wedge. Perfect!

  5. Good looking players irons for sure. Cobra sure is stepping up their aesthetic game with these clubs.

  6. it also has something to do with better design and weight (center of gravity in particular) positioning to allow for stronger (modern) lofts…not just marketing gimmick..

  7. I definitely like the looks of the irons. I like the simple look to the CB’s, compared to the crazy looking irons being put out these days. (even from Titleist) I think I will own a set soon.
I would try the MB’s, but they do not come left handed. (as far as I can tell) This has annoyed me with a lot of the companies over the years. I realize that they do not sell a ton of lefty “players” clubs. But they could make a limited number.
But….I think I just might pull the trigger on the CB’s. I will post a report, if/when I get a set.

  8. i hit both the mb and cb at a demo day this weekend… i had the idea going in that i was going to focus on the ap2 titleist… after hitting ap2, zm’s and both cobras i found that i liked the mb and zm’s very much… both inspired confidence and i actually found them to handle the thin shots much better… the ap2’s were clunky… any of the other 3 would suit me fine…

i play to a 3 and currently play j36 blades which are not forgiving at all.. both the zm and cobra mb seemed as forgiving as the ping irons i grew up playing…
    hope that helps

  9. I have been shopping for a new set of irons for the last month or so. the first club that I demo’d was the Cobra Pro CB and from the first shot I hit with it, it felt great. I spent days at the range hitting a hand full of different clubs and this one felt the best without a doubt!!! I have been playing X-14’s for the last 5-6 years, and i hit my six about 175-180 and with every other club i tried (Titleist AP2, Titleist ZB, MP57, MP67, Callaway X-Forged, Callaway X-20 Tour) I was one full club shorter. The Cobra Pro CB was exactly the same distance as my old clubs, but the consistency was out of this world. Every shot I hit was 175-178 yds. shot dispertion was very good. mis-hits didnt feel that bad and were off the target line much less then the other clubs I tried, and distance lost on bad shots was much better with the Cobra. Clean shots felt much better than all of the other clubs with equally good shots. The trajectory is high with these clubs for sure, but shots definately seemed to flatten out at the apex and come down very nicely for good distance. because of this I choose for the Rife Project X 6.0 shafts to get the ball just a bit lower for my swing. When all said and done, this club is absolutely the best i have ever hit!

  10. if you plan on ordering these clubs, expect a looooooong delay. i ordered mine 3 weeks ago and i just spoke to a rep and they said not to expect them until the first or second week of june! 😡

  11. I got my set of Pro CB last week and put them into play and have to say that they are fantastic! I ordered them one degree strong and with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts with Sensicore and all I can say is WOW! My previous iron set is TaylorMade r7 with DG S300 shafts and I love them, but I knew I needed a ‘player’s’ set to go to the next level. They are forgiving, and the feedback will let you know if you missed the sweet spot. But even when they are miss-hit slightly, they still travel just a bit less than when struck pure. They definitely feel like ‘butter.’ I just ordered the Pro MB 9, PW and GW and will replace the same in the Pro CB set. The long irons in this set are relatively easy to hit accurately and with loft, however, I decided to replace the 4 and 3 irons with Mizuno’s MP Fli-Hi. When its all said and done my set will look like this… Callaway X-Forged 60, 64 LW, Titleist Spin-Milled 53 SW, Cobra Pro MB GW, PW, 9, Cobra Pro CB 8, 7, 6, 5, and Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 4, 3. All with the DG S300 shafts with Sensicore.

  12. Well I’ve gone and made another switch! I played the Pro CB for about 6 weeks and love them, however, I ordered the Pro MB GW, PW and 9 and put them into play and have to say that they are even better then the CB’s! At first I thought they might be too much club for my handicap of 9-I was wrong. They are even easier to hit than the CB’s and much easier to control the ball flight. They feel even more solid than the CB’s and the setup gives you all the inspiration and confidence you could ask for. Since then, I’ve ordered the 8, 7, 6 and 5 irons. I’ve replaced my 4 iron with the Titleist AP2 4 irons and my 3 iron with the Titleist AP1 3 iron. My wedges are Vokey Custom Spin Milled 56 TVD and a 60M. I’m really thrilled with this setup and know they will take my game to a new level. I also changed my swing to the “Stack & Tilt” swing which allows be to make greater solid contact/ball striking. Good golfing to you.

  13. My local pro asked if i was interested in trying his set of cobra pro MB (4 to pw) as i normally play with mizuno MP32’s. I initially tried the 5, 7 and 9 irons for comparison purposes and to gain some feed back on playability. The flight of the ball was lower and as a result distance was improved but the more important gain was accuracy. After short practise periods these clubs became easier to hit, they are solid with great ball flight and i will be carrying out further testing this week, before deceiding if they will remain in the bag.

  14. Just an update on the Cobra Pro MB irons, have over the past days being hitting individual clubs to get a feel for the irons and see what the true distances can be achieved.

Hit 4 thru to PW and they all felt solid, great ball flight lower than my Mizunos and longer due to slightly lower lofts, took them on the course for the first time this evening, these clubs are the real deal, they offer a compact address position, the S300 shafts are superb and the results are straight hits from all numbers.

Played 8 holes as a loop, and was within 10 feet with all approach shots to the pins and the ball stopped within 3 to 4 feet, no spin back which is good for me as i dont want to be zipping them off the green.

These clubs are easier to hit than Mizunos, the forged heads are very soft and therefore will knock, but this is a small sacrifice for such a marvelous club.

Looking for a great set of clubs, then demo these irons.

  15. I tried out the MB’s (or rather, the 7-iron) alongside with Mizuno MP-62’s (Mizuno 6-iron, Nike 7-iron) and Nike’s Victory Reds. I’ve been a fan of Mizuno irons for some time now and was looking to finally purchase a set. However, I was flabbergasted by the MB’s. According to the computer, I was hitting the 7-iron 178 yards – only 6 less than the Mizuno 6-iron -, with minimal sidespin and solid backspin (again, clearly more than with the other clubs).

I’ve been playing with Titleist DCI 990B’s and prior to those, with Taylor Made Supersteel -irons. I’ll be sure to demo the MB’s again later this summer (again alongside with the Mizuno’s) and possibly make my move.

  16. Pro CB’s picked up in pawn shop for $200 with an odessey black putter, cobra s9 dr and 3w, 2 titelist wedges, golf bag.
CB’s had 6.0 proj x in them swapped them out for 5.5. played the best game of my life with these irons. girs were excellent as these irons seem to know where the greens are. was playing callaway fusions b4 but just liked the look of these CB’s for some reason. they are a club for a better player i agree but they hit soooooo nice., just let the club do the work.!!! thx cobra
