Volume Three Hundred Ninety-Five

Two majors, a minor, and Mo…

Hittin' the LinksIt’s a major week (again)! Though this past week had two majors, the Women’s British Open and the U.S. Senior Open, it’s the upcoming men’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool that will get the most attention. It should be interesting.

The game’s best are preparing to tackle a course that on paper looks akin to one from a Rick Reilly novel, but with better hygiene. Tiger won seemingly easily in 2006 by eschewing his driver (something he may try again). Is he fully recovered from back surgery and ready to resume his pursuit of Nicklaus’ major wins record? Will Phil defend his first Open Championship title? Or will the winner be Rose or Fowler or Spieth or McIlroy or Westwood or [insert your pick here]? Can’t wait to see it get started.

In the meantime, let’s hit the links.

Hole #1: Go Mighty Mo
Despite never finishing inside the top 25 at a major, Mo Martin won the Women’s British Open by making eagle on the final hole. The American’s final round 72 tied for low round of the day. [Link]

Hole #2: Coming Up Rose
Justin Rose out-distanced the field at the Scottish Open. We’re kind of wishing that we’d picked him for the Open Championship after seeing what he did at Aberdeen. [Link]

Hole #3: This Just In, Monty IS Good
After a career spent failing to win majors (or in the U.S., in general), Colin Montgomerie has now won two of the last three senior-circuit majors in America. It appears that he’s finally learned to tone down his rabbit ears and relax a little out there. Monty overcame Gene Sauers in a three-hole aggregate playoff after the two finished regulation play tied at 5-under. [Link]

Hole #4: Harman Wins First Title
Brian Harman got his first PGA TOUR win at the John Deere Classic Sunday. His 22-under total bested Zach Johnson (who always seems to win or almost win this event) by one stroke. Back-to-back-to-back birdies helped fuel a final round 66 for the winner. He’s now headed for Hoylake this week. [Link]

Hole #5: Sounds Like a Scramble We Once Played In
We’re all for having the occasional adult beverage (or two) on the course or at the 19th hole, but this is taking it a bit too far. [Link]

Hole #6: More Trouble for Tiger(?)
The PED questions and his connections with Dr. Anthony Galea continue to follow Tiger. So is this a case of “where there’s smoke…,” or just a good way to sell books? [Link]

Hole #7: Ruling Please

Hole #8: Youth Is Served
What were you doing in seventh grade? Probably not qualifying for the U.S. Amateur. That’s the problem with kids these days; they’re so impatient. [Link]

Hole #9: Oh, that Jesper
Put Jesper Parnevik on a Segway and humor (and pain) ensues. His comedian father is known for rib ticklers, but this doesn’t look like it tickled. [Link]
