The Bicycle Thread

All things bicycle here.

This guy installed a Loud Bicycle. It's basically a car horn on a bike. Folks, don't be surprised if you hear a car horn and a bike is behind you. He also vlogged his ride via his helmet cam. LOOK AT ALL THOSE BICYCLISTS! You can hear him use the Loud Bicycle at around 05:54. I wondered if the drivers even noticed in time.

Looks fine to me! You could just redo it, it's just tape?

Testing out a new mount, going slow because afraid camera might drop. Really need to replace the brake pads. And buy a proper helmet cam. Also recently switched from SPDs to Look pedals, still getting used to clipping on and off.

I've always used black too.  Just wanted a change.  It looks great, but...

I've ridden the West Side Greenway not a few times. It is usually tourists during work hours. That section between Pier 40 and the TriBeCa bridge around BMCC and Stuyvesant is going to feel as residential as a neighborhood in a humongous metropolis can be. There are tennis courts, playgrounds, water views. It is the last place you'd expect some depraved subhuman to ram you from the back. F** you extremists, I will not even rethink, not one iota,  using the greenway. You don't win. I will go on doing whatever the hell I want. Hope the NYPD doesn't go overboard with barriers to protect it. I wonder what they'll do with the bike/utility lane in Central Park. Prospect Park will be car free next year.

So what does it say?

If a thousand enemies are intent on my demise
With you as my friend, fear won't arise.
I'm alive with the hope of union with thee
Every moment I fear death, otherwise.
Breath by breath, your scented breeze I must inhale
Moment by moment, from sorrows exhale my cries.
Only dreaming of you, go to sleep my two eyes
Patiently longing for thee, my heart to itself lies.
Don't pull away your rein when you cut me with your sword
My head is my shield, while my hand your saddle-strap ties.
Where can we see your face just as you are, true and pure?
Each based on his own grasp can realize.
Indigent Hafiz is the apple of people's eyes
At your door, prostrated, your vision espies.

Debating whether to meet up with group going out early to ride the NYC Marathon route, cold and rainy supposedly on Sunday, but carless route all clear to ride is pretty tempting and 26.2 miles on a bike is nothing. Will probably make a spot decision, hopefully it's not wet. Can't wake up late or will be stopped by 5-0, so an early day. Would be really cool to ride the QBB without the 5 Bore Tour crowdedness.

Yeah, those weirdo cyclists.

Quote

“Our data confirm that the vast majority of cyclist injuries can be avoided simply by driving an automobile instead of biking around like some weirdo,”

“Regular people drive cars because it’s the normal and not the abnormal thing to do. If every cyclist purchased and operated a car like you’re supposed to as an adult, bike fatalities would drop an estimated 40 percent within six months alone.” Gafferty went on to say that people who biked for exercise should consider driving to a gym and using a stationary bike facing a wall of televisions like everyone else.

Gotta love The Onion!

If every car owner (except me, of course) traded in their cars for bikes, auto deaths would decrease by 100%.

LeBron James on bicycles in the WSJ.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-lebron-james-interview-about-bicycles-1533561787

Quote

I’d wanted to talk to James for a long time about cycling. Readers of this column know I am a massive bike dork, and I’ve known the three-time NBA champion likes to ride—James has been spied commuting to games on his mountain bike, and in summers past, he’s hosted bike-a-thons in Ohio. At one point he even owned a stake in the bicycle maker Cannondale.

...

“A bicycle, for me, was the only way to get around the city. If I wanted to meet some of my friends, travel across the city, go to school, play basketball—anything—the bicycle was the way I got around.”

But that was just part of it. A bicycle also represented freedom, James said.

“Me and my friends, when we got on our bikes, we would just ride,” he recalled. “Sometimes we would even get lost, because we’d be gone for so long. But there was a sense of joy and comfort. There was nothing that really could stop us. We felt like we were on top of the world.”

“It was a way of life. If you had a bike, it was a way to kind of let go and be free.”

Quote

James couldn’t remember the make of his first bike, which he said his mother, Gloria, got for him.

“I wish I could,” he said. “I used to love those Mongoose bikes with the pegs on the back, and people used to ride [the pegs.] I loved those. And then a 10-speed that came out by Huffy—I remember that, being able to start changing gears. There were a lot of hills we used to ride [in Akron]—especially one hill called North Hill. It was a massive hill, and if you didn’t have any gears, it was going to take you a long time.”

As he got older, James said he began to turn to cycling as a way to maintain his fitness. This has continued into his NBA career, which is about to enter its 16th season.

You may remember seeing photos of James pedaling the streets of Miami on his way to Heat games at American Airlines Arena. James—along with his Heat teammate, Dwyane Wade —also participated in local Critical Mass rides, where hundreds of cyclists took over the roads in a show of group unity.

“We loved Critical Mass,” James said of the event, which occurs in cities throughout the U.S., as well as globally. “It was the last Friday of the month.”

(A quick bike dork aside: It is pretty hardcore that LeBron James knows that Critical Mass is always the last Friday of the month.)

Now that I've seen it up close a couple of times, this looks like a lot of fun. They use very clever ways to manipulate their bikes to control the ball, like braking hard, letting the back wheel pop in the air so ball will go over to favored side to take a shot. It looks like they're better cyclists than say hockey players, it's like hockey in slow motion, probably the learning curve is controlling the bike first, than the controlling ball skills. I thought some of the bikes were fixies, but they're not, using front brake to control/maneuver. It seems you're allowed to scoop and pick up the ball in the mallet head, like a carry in basketball. The mallets are actually made from old driver shafts, the head sort of a whiffle ball in the shape of a cylinder. One guy bought a battery operated leaf blower to clear the field. There is a ref calling out when the periods end. Would love to try this.
