I don’t think Spieth needs to win, but cannot go out and shoot a horrible round. Must stay under par for the final round. If someone plays better, it is what it is that is golf.

What don’t you like about “how he carries himself”?

He seemed to get the jitters back on Sunday.  He was really twitchy at setup again.

I feel like this weekend was a Spiethian Rorschach test. He led the field in SG: Approach, and when he was contending in majors and winning, he was a consistently great iron player. That's a good sign. His putter was hot and cold, but that feels normal to me with him (or anyone, for that matter).

On the other hand, he was terrible off the tee. He's never been great off the tee, but he will need to be better off the tee to win in the future. There are definitely some courses where he'll be dead if he sprays it like he did this weekend. On the other hand, there's one fairly important course where you can spray it and still win (Augusta)...

Personally, I'm slightly encouraged by what he did, but I'm not sure he's turned the corner. He has to be able to keep it in play on holes like 15 and 17 off the tee.

Some of that is smoke and mirrors.

When we were consulting, we saw a few bits of data like this (I’m going to slightly inflate some of these numbers to make the point):

Imagine a par four where the scoring average is 4.0. Spieth might hit a drive into the “other” here, from where the expected score is 4.2, thus LOSING 1.2 strokes off the tee. But when he arrives at his ball, he’s in some trampled down stuff with a wide enough gap between the trees that he doesn’t have to pitch out sideways or take a penalty stroke or anything. So he hits a decent shot to 33’ on the green, thus shaving those 1.2 strokes off as the average from there is 2.0 strokes (he reduced his expected strokes to hole out from 4.2 to 2.0 with one stroke, hence, +1.2).

Thus, his driver numbers are deflated sometimes, and his approach shot gains are inflated sometimes.

Complains about courses, blames his caddy,  sniveling  about bad shots,  panics, and seems to take no responsibility.  Just my impression is all. Maybe he is a fine young man, just not my cup of tea.

He had the golf world in his hands and I feel losing it haunts him. I have no idea so just my observation.

He is a walking business, and he is a business I choose not to support.

Who are your favorite tour players? Because pretty much every tour player has done/said multiple of those things you listed at some point in their careers.

I don’t know the stats but I’m not sure it was necessarily good golf. He certainly placed better than he has and he did much better on his last two weekend rounds than he has for quite some time. But damn....he’s not gonna keep going with his awful tee shots. I felt like he was constantly scrambling. Bunker, rough, bunker,  rough damn near every hole. He can’t rely on 30’ putts and chip ins or hole outs for eagles on par 4’s.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
