Dan, I'm not sure what you were doing. :hmm:

In the first shot, your left hand was weak but your right hand was strong. Then the opposite was true in the next grip: a strong left hand and a weak right hand.

Challenge not defeated.

So ... maybe I don't know the difference between a strong and weak grip ...

For a righty:

  • Strong: both hands clockwise or "to the right."
  • Weak: both hands counter-clockwise or "to the left."

Armed with that knowledge, I'll definitely try this again next time I'm at the range.

Wouldn't be a challenge if I didn't try it and fail the first time, though ...

Tried this again last night. I failed. If you want to see the first video of me failing, it's in the spoiler below. I actually hit a perfect one with my second shot with the strong grip. If you watch, make sure you see my hilarious attempts with my weak grip.

Spoiler

This one was an attempt at the end of my range session, trying to get the feel for what I need to do better. The strong one was good contact, but it was about a 20 yard hook. The weak one was just high, straight, and short. Better contact though.

Now that I'm doing this correctly, it's pretty tough for me. The feels are completely exaggerated to get it even close. I think I could do it ... if I devoted an entire range session to it. Not going to happen, though.

Verdict for me: Failed the challenge. Strong grip was better than the weak grip. May not have been a great idea to try this, because now I'm thinking I should weaken my grip in my normal swing to get the ball started further to the right ...

I struggle to keep the face square, and I am quite interested in it.

Is there a best exercise for practicing it?

Would you consider this challenge to be such an exercise?

Is it purely mental, or can it be a muscle memory endeavor?

Your second video wasn't too far off. And I think if you thought about it a bit, you could pull it off. It's just about feeling the club face and knowing what conditions you have to make occur around impact (weak = handle pretty far forward, palmar flexed left wrist turned down to the ground, etc.) to hit the ball straight.

I think you're taking it more seriously than intended. It's just a challenge, to see if you can hit the ball straight. It's not a drill or an exercise.

If I'm working on a drill or exercises for club face control I usually like the old "set up straight, square, and have someone say 'left, right, or straight' during the early takeaway" type of thing.

Figured I’d resurrect this thread for many who have not seen it. Not sure how accurate this Mevo is. I thought it has been pretty dang gone good with using it here this week, but it said my strong grip smash factor was 1.51...sounds a bit absurd. At any rate:

I realize I was hitting into a net, but I just saw this thread and wanted to give it a go. I think it went relatively well considering how awkward it felt. I’ll wait for someone else to confirm before I claim it...I want it to be considered legit

What settings did you use? I find that into my net, I have to use a different distance from the ball because my net is only 7 feet from the ball. If I move the MEVO between 6 and 7 feet, I get different numbers. I use Indoor 6 feet for my net and outdoor 7 feet at the range.

I used “indoor 6ft” with about 10-12’ from the ball position to the net. Again, all week long (I’ve been borrowing this from a friend) it’s given me more consistent data with smash factors closer to 1.3 with 8-9irons. There may have been something off for that particular set up last night, but really the reason I used it was to document the “carrying distance” for purposes of meeting @iacas’s 85% distance criteria...so “apples to apples” it did what I needed it to do.

I’ll set up again today see what kind of numbers I get and see (if it still is giving higher than normal numbers) what needs tweaking.

I went back and rewatched the video and I may have have the Mevo further away than 6ft...I would intuitively think that would decrease the numbers rather than increase them, but I’m no physicist. Again, I’ll look at the set up today. I appreciate your feedback as it’s not something I would’ve bothered to check being a one-time anomaly, but moving forward, you’ve planted the seed for problem solving.

Had to give this a shot couple times today while practising, at first it felt so uncomfortable I couldn't focus on my target at all. After doing this even my normal grip felt weird for a while. Not sure was the weak grip weak enough, but it surely felt like the wrists might break if I hit that hard dry ground, ended up hitting little thin. One friend used to play with almost this weak grip and he always said the hard fairways make his wrists hurt, now I understand why. 😅

Also felt like hitting with completely straight stiff hands with the weak grip, one lever got completely robbed. The strong grip felt like I could hit the ball with nothing but wrists and it still would go a mile. 😄

I did this before with the Mevo which verified my distances being the same (see above), but was hitting into a net so near impossible to discern trajectory. I wasn’t awarded the badge and I assume that was why. I gave it go at the range today and my twos ball landed 5-8yds from one another.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
