Thanks for the lecture dad.

Lighten up. It’s just golf. And we’re just discussing a guy who deserves some bullshit for all the bullshit he’s dished out.

Interesting information in a golf.com article by Nick Piastowski:

"Bryson D. has gained size. He estimates that he’s put on about 40 pounds since he left college in 2015, and about 20 pounds over the PGA Tour’s recently ended three-month hiatus. Because of that gain, he’s gained distance. In PGA Tour events in 2020 before the break, he averaged 321.3 yards off the tee, 18.8 yards more than his 2019 average. Because of his size gain, he’s also gained two shirt sizes. He said after Friday’s second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge that he’s gone from a size medium shirt to an extra large.

As he’s added, he’s lost. To his benefit.

In an examination of DeChambeau’s 2020 and 2019 second rounds at Colonial (where the hole distances were slightly different), he lost 304 yards on the length remaining on his second shots on non-par-3s, an average of 21.7 yards per hole. Maybe an iron or two shorter. More wedges.

The average gets bigger when you take away the holes where DeChambeau did not seek distance off the tee.

On holes 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 18, he lost 285 yards on the length remaining on his second shots, an average of 31.7 yards per hole. Maybe two or three irons shorter. More wedges. "

Watching the Tour live now. Unless he’s discovered some new type of abdominal muscles, he’s fat. He’s got a beer belly. That is not the best way to bulk up.

Now we can start the Bryson’s so fat joke thread.

Yes it is.  To "bulk up" as a goal, gaining belly fat is part of the deal.  Most people will decide to shed it later, and can do so with much less difficulty than most of us.

I don’t think he’s thinking of that at all. He is different but not because he wants to be. Incessantly milling over air density numbers prior to a shot is OCD. OCD ranges all over the place from minor, insignificant actions such as straightening a crooked picture to totally disrupting one’s life.

Wanting to bulk up and hit the ball further is just Bryson trying to figure how to be more successful on tour ...and that’s fine. It seems to me the bulking as he did it isn’t the best way or even necessary to achieve more distance. Lots of golfers have improved their distance without bulking up. But I’ll admit it’s probably easier to go from 245 to 275 than it is to go from 315 to 345. Just as it’s easier to go from a 20hcp to a 10 than a 10 to scratch.

I think both could be true. He wants to be better AND he wants to be different.

Wanting to be better only makes sense considering it's his profession. I think he also LIKES being a little different. Otherwise, he would wear a hat like everyone else.

BTW - I like his hat.

NO! This is really important!

I can't think of a single thing in the world more important that BDC's weight and/or choice in hats..... eh, maybe one or two things.....

Same thing with Ben Hogan back in the '50's.  Same people on this forum were posting comments about Ben's choice in hats.  A few of them even started threads about Gene Sarazen's knickers.

I’m starting to get a feeling that you guys are fat shaming Bryson...

Yea, he put on fat with his muscle. That’s going to happen when you bulk. He may cut at some later date and just end up being jacked in a year or two. I’d have to do the same if I wanted to put on 20+ lbs. I won’t, because that’s not my fitness goal.

He’s clearly getting results and that’s what matters.

Yeah, he sucks...  He led the field in driving distance, strokes gained off the tee, and strokes gained tee to green, en route to T3 after a big layoff.  Had he putted well, he would have won handily.  Look, I hate how slow he plays, but otherwise, I'm fine with him.  What are your issues with him?  Do you know him personally and have an issue or something?  Perhaps I missed a detail on the Bryson-hate.

I was trying to read through this thread, but got a little lost between the fat shaming and the grammar police.

I think the real topic here, is that like bryson and his over-analyzation of everything or not, you can't really knock it if it works.

All Bryson did was identify the area of the game where he could separate himself from the field and absolutely attack it.   Gaining 7.4 strokes on the field off the tee over the weekend is absolutely ridiculous.  now, is he going to be that long and continue to have above average accuracy?   that remains to be seen.  But, if he does, you're looking at a guy thats going to be camped out around the top of leaderboards for many tournaments to come.

he actually didn't putt pooly.   gained more than a stroke on the field over the weekend.

It was actually around the green where he lost the tournament, where he was 61st out of 67 players.

So you don’t like Bryson for whatever reason. You realize you’re responding in the same manner that Tiger haters do whenever Tiger pops up in the news, right?

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.

    • I do not follow amateur or Korn Ferry tour but this story might get me to pay attention. At age 15 to be as accomplished as he is makes me think we may be seeing a future star.  A story of him breaking out may help reinvigorate golf viewership. Miles Russell has a hot start, cools off but finishes with a 68 in first Korn Ferry event Miles Russell, a 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach resident, made his Korn Ferry Tour debut on...
    • Day 8: Indoor backswing work, mostly rehearsals of takeaway. Hit some balls wtih 6-iron working on adding flow, but not too Much which I tend to do, swaying too far away from target.
    • Day 55: 4/18/2024 Got to the range again today. Planned to do my priority pieces and then hit targets with irons. But after my priority pieces I hit a few drives and tugged them all hard left. .... Uh... oh boy.  So, I spent about a half hour trying to hit targets at the range with my driver.
