I would really like to win any of the four.  The Masters, however, seems to have more continuing benefits.  There is the annual Champions dinner (which I believe is being copied by the other events).  One can play in the following years indefinitely(?).  You have playing privileges at ANGC (although I have been told it is far from free).

I'd pick the U.S. Open due it's percieved difficulty.

I think the last time this question was aked I probably chose the Masters for a different reason.

Use your imagination on this one. It is Sunday at the US Open; You are in the final pairing. You are tied for the lead with another player who's in the clubhouse. You are the only other player with a chance to win. You are about to play the final hole and you realize that it can be played one of two ways. The first way all but guarantees you a par and will put you in the play-off. The second way to play the hole gives you a chance at making birdie, but also brings bogey into play.

Would you Rather...? #25: Take the conservative approach and guarantee yourself a spot in the play-off? … Or … Be aggressive and give yourself a chance to win the tournament on the final hole, but also create the possibility of making bogey and missing the play-off?

Bonus question: Does it change your answer depending on who the player is with which you are tied?

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

The only real way to "all but guarantee a par" is to give yourself a birdie putt, and I'm a good putter, so I'm taking that… because it gives me the best chance of outright winning or tying.

@iacas  I always like your answers, but I hate it when you answer first.  🤪

I'd probably go the aggressive route and go for the out right win..

It's a major, and I have been playing well since I'm tied, and in the last group after 71 holes. A playoff is still one of the three possibilities.

I'd take the conservative approach but it would depend upon the hole layout.   It wouldn't matter who I was competing against

Aggressive but I also don't believe really in a conservative approach.  There's a right way and a wrong way.  Aggressive is more likely to be the right play to get the lowest score possible.

By nature I am a conservative player and likely would try to assure myself of a par with an outside chance of birdie rather than risk the hero shot.  Of course, there could be numerous other facts that would make me change my mind.

I think the answer @iacas gave is probably the "right" answer here. But knowing myself. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be taking the aggressive route and bringing bogey into play.

I'm going to pick Aggressive. At least it will be memorable. Thinking back I can't remember who won the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot, but I remember Phil Mickelson hitting his ball off the hospitality tent.

I actually put the bonus question on there because like an idiot I thought the US open had an 18 hole play-off. So, it was kind of a would you like to play with this guy or that guy? kind of question. Anyhow, It wasn't until this morning that I remembered that the US Open now does a 2 hole aggregate play-off. … Eh, I'm old. I forget things.

Depends on where we’re playing the U.S. Open, if it’s Winged Foot that 18th hole is brutal. (Not as hard as Phil made it look in 2006). One “bad” shot and you can make 6 in a heartbeat. That being said, I’m basically guaranteeing 4 by playing it for a “king” keeping my chance to win the championship in regulation. But almost guaranteeing a play-off.

Now Torrey Pines is a different animal because the 18th is a par-five. If you hit the fairway off the tee. You will probably be able to reach the green in two. Yes it brings 6 into play, but you can also make a 3 or 4 and win the championship.

That being said, it depends on where we’re playing the Open. And two holes in a playoff is dodgey. I would try to win the championship with a putt, if that makes sense.

Sounds right. But I think it might depend on where the pin is cut. And the wind. If it's a sucker pin where a miss puts you in jail, I might play it safe. But then, second place money on Tour these days is pretty doggone good! This is just my way of saying I DON'T KNOW!!

I've read more than one article about Mickelson at Winged Foot saying that when he pulled the Driver, Bones should have grabbed it off of him and snapped it over his knee! Dumbest damn decision Phil ever made!

He has said if he hit 5W he couldn't get around the corner to have a shot to the green.

So maybe not a bad decision, but bad execution.

I have been thinking on this and if I were in contention, I think the option to go for the "W" has to stay on the table.  In reality, I think the pleasure of snatching sure victory from the guy in the clubhouse and making them head back out on the course after chilling down, knowing their head has been dealing with what "if's" and my mind is fresh to keep going would be an advantage from my mindset.  Something about being in the playoff with a sure 2nd is pretty sweet.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
