Definitely hole out from the fairway twice a year for the rest of my life. An eagle on a par four is -2. A hole in one is -2. Two awesome shots/year would be something to look forward to forever.😃

I would be in the latter category, love the driver not overly fond of the putter.   I am pretty sure I would find something that "comes close" to what I use currently - either a White Steel 5 or Df992 and learn to love it.  Maybe its big stick mojo - but I've hit drivers that were totally at odds with me from day one, and others that were like buttah out of the box.

I would definitely pick the putter over the driver.  Couple of reasons. First you are using the putter on every hole, maybe twice.  The driver you might use 10 to 12 times a round maximum. Secondly, there is no substitute for a good putter, unless you hit your irons onto the green so well you have tap-in birdies.  Instead of the driver you can use a 3 wood.  Heck, Henrik Stenson does so and he has even won a major.

I would go for the Driver.  Even though I really like my new putter this year I feel I could get used to a different one more easily than a driver.  Also, Driving has a higher separation value then putting so a better driver is my choice.

Easy, I’ll take the driver all day long.
 

 Hell, I’d rather have a Driver that I love and no putter than to be forced to use a driver I don’t hit well.

Good drives set up birdies.  Bad drives set up doubles...

Would you rather #39 Given recent discussion of clubs and looking back over the thread as a whole, the thought came to me - which part of your game would you benefit most in regards to technology:  (1) Play the latest driver/fairway/hybrids but have to play irons (long-mid-short (not incl wedges)) that are a minimum 10yrs old or (2) Play the latest in irons (long-mid-short (again wedges excluded) but have to play driver/fairway/hybrids that are a minimum 10yrs old.  The caveat with wedges is that they tend to wear more quickly and are replaced more often.

I would pick older driver/fairway/hybrid, because I don't think their technology has advanced as much as iron technology has.  Plus, irons, wedges and putters tend to be my scoring clubs.  Yes, hitting it closer means I have a shorter iron in, but I really don't think I would be 20 or 30 yards longer with a newer driver. At most maybe 10 yards or one club difference

I like this post, good golf sense. If I really hated the driver I could tee off with a fw or hybrid. Like @pganapathysaid, there really isn't a good substitute for a putter, not for me anyway.

I'm going with the latest driver but it was a tough call.  I replaced both my driver & putter in the past 12 months and both have helped but based on LSW driving has a higher SV than putting so I will go with the newer tech on the driver if I have to choose.  As for the other clubs, mine are already 10 years old and hitting the newer ones at the range has not shown me significant difference over my current.  My issue is "Technique" not "Technology".  Maybe if I had better swing mechanics then the improved technology in Irons & Wedges may be of more benefit to me but that is not where my game is at today.

1) Drivers/fairways/hybrids have come a long way in the last ten years, but then again so have irons. But the players irons 10 years ago are very similar to the irons now. Oh I know what irons I’d play 🙂

I would rather have a driver that I love and putt with a wedge, pretty much. I've had lots of putters I love but I believe a good putter can putt with anything.

If I have a driver I love it means I'm hitting it straight.

There is zero difference between 10 year old irons and current irons. Wedges included. And you don't wear them out unless you're hitting thousand of balls off sand and grit. Fairway woods and hybrids haven't changed much at all. In fact there are many hybrids and fairways that are over 10 years old that are more popular than current models. Driver technology has improved, so I'm taking the current driver and 10 year old fairways, hybrids, irons and a decent putter.

      Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
