At any rate. Let's imagine you are the GOAT. For a moment pretend that you are the best in the world at a given sport. Would you rather....

Be the best golfer in the world?

OR

Be the best in the world at a different sport? ... If so, which sport and why?

OR

You wouldn't want to be the best in the world at any sport, and why?

Tom Brady, step aside. No, actually I wouldn't want to be the best in any sport where there is a high probability of injury. So therefore golf or lawn darts.  Oh wait a minute, don't people get impaled playing lawn darts?

Golf, because you can still likely be anonymous almost anywhere, and you have a better chance at being the best for a long time. You should have enough money to make the rest of your life comfortable, though not as much as you'd earn if you were best in another sport… but still enough.

Baseball might be the best right now. Francisco Lindor will earn roughly my annual salary per hour to play baseball. That will depend of course on how many games he plays and if his team makes a play-off run. It will also depend on how well I do (I'm paid on commission.) But if you just count hours played during the regular season it comes out to pretty close to my annual salary per hour of work for Francisco. What makes that amazing is I bet only a small percentage of Americans would recognize Francisco Lindor if they bumped into him on the street. And he might be the most recognizable baseball player currently playing.... maybe?

I'd have a agree with the non-contact sports.   The average running back in the NFL (not for long) does not have an extended career.   Baseball while it does pay significantly more than golf doesn't have the appeal for me as it once did.   I like the individuality of golf.    I've played enough team sports to realize they are great but golf since it is the most challenging sport I've played would be my choice.

The drawback to being the GOAT is the time away from family the practice and playing would require.     If it were possible to strike a balance between family and any sport while being the GOAT, it would definitely be golf.

Definitely hole out from the fairway twice a year for the rest of my life. An eagle on a par four is -2. A hole in one is -2. Two awesome shots/year would be something to look forward to forever.😃

Hole out for sure. Fairway eagles 😱.  One can dream.  Now to put in the work.  When I'm holing out two eagles a year, then im consistently hitting birdies.  And occasionally pars.  Which  means I'm playing tournaments.  And I'm winning tournaments.  Who knows, the skies the limit gentleman.  Golf is GOLD.  Thanks for having me on this forum.  Golf lover and first year golfer here.  Why didn't I do this 30 years ago?  Wait, it was so dang expensive! Well nowadays, there's so much funding and sponsorships.  Charities.  So much talent out there now too.  That's why those who shine are the best of the best.  But i like to think luck helps on those days too.  A lot of luck.  Just like any sport.  It's your time, you will shine.

1) Have the Ryder Cup Remain in the format it is today?

OR

2) Have the Ryder Cup add a third team. USA vs Europe vs The Rest of The World?

That, definitely.

I think the Presidents Cup will begin to get more competitive. And may be more so than the Ryder Cup over the next 50 years.

I'm voting to add the third team.

I'd like to see some of the South African players, Australian players, Asian players, Mexico, Canada etc...

Would have to go with 1 - adding a third team (that is essentially the International President’s Cup Team) would take away from both events.

#1 - leave it the same with two teams.

In the spirit of inclusion, it might make sense to have the Ryder Cup USA team add Canada and Mexico to make it North America vs Europe.  Same with the President's Cup - move Canada and Mexico from "Rest of the World".

I'd keep the same format.  First, I like the history of the current event, even though there have been changes in the composition of the two teams.  Second, I don't know if there's an appropriate way to format a 3-way match play team event.

I'd take #1.    It's risk and reward for your life longevity but I'd guess I'd save over $2k / yr.    The other people I'd spend time with don't golf so a beach vacation would be their choice.    I could take the savings and spend time on the beach.

I already get to play for free (I do some work on the website, etc.), so I'm going to go with #2. 😄

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
