I would rather shoot 5 of my best rounds.  After all, I am pretty accustomed to shooting bad rounds.

1 of every 5 rounds being a great round would be fine.  The hard part would be getting though a potentially long stretch of crappy rounds.  It would kill me if I got 3 great rounds right off the bat followed by 20 bad rounds only to get the final 2 good rounds at the end.  That would be a really long losing streak and would clearly frustrate me.

Average score. My best rounds ever aren’t particularly spectacular anyway and my worst rounds ever are spectacularly bad. I’d probably quit golf before completing all of the 20 bad rounds.

Oh gosh if I shoot 100+ 20 times in the next 25 rounds, then something has gone very wrong with my universe, very very wrong.

So average is fine.

Been mulling it for a couple days.  As my score tends to bounce any way  - I’ve had close to 80 (still looking to break it) and been in the high 90’s in the span of a few rounds, option one offers more potential to show that aspects of the game are getting better.  So one it is!

I’m not trying to call you out but I keep seeing this type of response for the reason that people pick #1 and I don’t understand it. The options state 20 of your worst rounds ever, not your worst rounds out of the current state of your game? So your worst rounds ever in your life are in the high 90’s?

I regularly shot over 120 when I first started playing, with 135 being the highest  round I can remember keeping a score on. I’m not going to play 20 rounds in the 130’s just to shoot 5 rounds of 78.

That doesn’t demonstrate that I’m getting better or I have the potential to get better at all.

Good point - the worst rounds that I ever kept score on were well north of the 135 you noted.  Makes me wonder - what would be my best rounds ever look like in terms of scoring?  Likewise, are those 5 rounds of greatness worth enduring 20 worst rounds ever? For me the promise of seeing and living those moments of magic are worth the pain of doing horribly. Maybe I should have been more clear on just how bad those numbers may potentially be.

Would You Rather #57:

Let's pretend the rules of golf suddenly change and you can add a 15th club to your bag.

Would You Rather:

Add an additional club to the top of your bag (i.e. An extra driver, another fairway wood or hybrid, or even a long iron)?

OR

Add an additional club to the bottom of your bag (i.e. An extra short iron, an extra wedge or even an extra putter)?

BTW - You can include the financial aspects in your decision (An extra wedge may be cheaper than an extra driver) or you can leave that out and pretend money is no object. Up to you.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Honestly, I am not even sure it makes a difference.  I currently have 11 clubs in my bag.  I doubt I will ever get up to 14 clubs these days.  When I was younger I had 13 or 14 clubs in the bag.  Now my irons start at 6 as opposed to 3 earlier

What's in the bag

  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)

That's funny. Because I have 14 in my bag but I own 16 clubs. Which is kind of why I asked this question.

I have:

  1. Driver
  2. 3-wood
  3. 5-wood
  4. 3-hybrid
  5. 4-hybrid
  6. 5-hybrid
  7. 5-iron
  8. 6-iron
  9. 7-iron
  10. 8-iron
  11. 9-iron
  12. PW
  13. GW
  14. SW
  15. LW
  16. Putter

Most often one or more of the hybrids is in the closet. But sometimes the 5-iron ends up getting cut in favor of a hybrid, sometimes the gap wedge gets cut. Sometimes the 5 wood or 3 wood will get cut. It all depends on how I'm hitting certain clubs and/or the course I'm playing. Last year for the tournament I play in late April, I took out the 5 iron and the 5 wood. BUT even though I played well, I missed having the 5 iron.

So, all of this is a long rant to say I'd like to have more clubs in my bag. Most of those are likely to be clubs I'd like to add to the top end of the bag. Heck, I'd like to carry a mini-driver.

Having said that, I've also known folks who have so few clubs in their bag they'll add a chipper, or even an extra putter, just for long or short putts or what ever. And of course everyone remembers when Phil put the extra driver in his bag, one set up for draw and one set up for fade.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Well I have this dilemma right now without needing to go over 14 clubs 😆 I have 13 clubs: Dr, 2i, 4i-9i, PW, GW, SW, and LW, plus putter. Conventionally I should add a 3w. And I have a pretty sizable gap yardage between 2i and Dr. But at the same time, My wedge distances are something like 140, 125, 105, 90. I wouldn't mind going with 5 wedges and having more like 140, 128, 116, 104, 92. I'm 100% unwilling to drop my 60˚ in favor of a higher loft as I absolutely LOVE my 60˚ around the green.

But, if I got 15 clubs, I guess I'd add both!

I already have 5 wedges in the bag so that's probably not an option.  Though I am eyeing that 64 degree wedge in the back of the closet.  On the other hand, a guy can't have too many putters... 😀

I’d add a left handed club. Maybe a 7i.

Well it’s just practical. It would get used more than another long iron or wedge.

I currently bounce between 12-13 clubs.  If I were gaming the max of 14 it would likely be a second putter because the guys at MGS said a blade is better on long putts and a mallet is best on short ones.  On the opposite side I would likely go mini-driver at the top.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
