I understand that.  But, if I’m striking the ball well one day, I tend to be striking the ball well for a time.  I’ll always take good ball striking over dumb luck, whether good or bad...

This is something I read, years ago, from a Tour pro. If you are playing well, go play! If you are not, go practice! It's not that hard to understand.

Would You Rather…? #16:

  • Hit the ball as solidly but, due to some luck or whatever, score relatively poorly for you.
  • Hit the ball poorly but, due to some luck or some holed chips or whatever, score really well

I just came across this thread and have enjoyed the conversations.  For me I have to go with the former as solid ball striking creates confidence. I love the feel of a solidly hit ball and have come to expect erratic scoring, so option is "life as I life it" at this time in my game.

Make a hole-in-one by hitting a perfect shot - one of the best strikes you have hit in your life - while playing alone. It is witnessed only by a complete stranger playing on another hole.

Make a hole-in-one in front of your best golf buddies, but completely by dumb luck - a thinned shot that happens to roll all the way up to the green and in the hole.

I pick #1 but...

That actually happened to me except my witnesses were the head pro and a local junior golfer on the accompanying practice range.  It was dusk and they saw it before I did.  Started jumping up and down.  It was the final hole on the course and the pro ushered me to the clubhouse bar and made the announcement.  I was young and naive.  Everyone was asking me to buy free drinks (I didn't even drink at the time)... I thought it was a scam.  Next hole-in-one I get I'm buying free drinks for the whole friggin' town and everyone on this forum.

The latter happened just this last spring.  I thinned a wedge that lipped out of the hole... all the while saying I would not accept a hole-in-one on those terms and nobody should say anything to anyone.  I guess I could have said I was hitting a stinger wedge into a 1 mph wind.

#1 for sure. I’ll take a well struck shot over just about any other potential outcome from a poor strike. I’d have the witness make a short video statement and text it to my friends.

Ugh.

I’m going with number 1, but it was a harder decision than I would have initially thought!

Heck, I'd take this one even if nobody saw it, because it doesn't change the fact that I got a hole in one.

I live in fear that my first hole in one will be a result of a shot I mishit. I've lipped out one that I totally thinned from 160… I was scared the six or eight seconds it took for that ball, on-line the whole way, to get to the hole.

I'm taking #2 because I've already had one from a really good shot.  This would kill my buddies because they saw the first one and this would only make it even funnier to get another one but on a bad shot!  (no one else in my usual/best group but me has had one; other good friends of mine have though)

I think I’m going with #2. It would make a great story.

Plus to anyone who wasn’t there, I striped that shot 😉

The only reason I didn’t write no witnesses is so people couldn’t just pick #1 because they wouldn’t have to buy any drinks.

Hell, I’m still taking my buddies out for drinks.  It’s only fair, they’re gonna have to listen to every detail, over and over all night long!

#1 for sure.  An ace is already a lucky shot, I don't want to make a terrible lucky shot.

I am not sure if that would be my response if I had not made a hole in one already.

#1. I already had a #2 on a short par 3. Hit a sprinkler head, called out the “bad bounce” only to have the ball trickle in the hole 😂

I 'd go with #1, but only because of the correct swing.

In my opinion as long as it is witnessed, a hio is a hio. That and both require some degree of luck. Dumb, or otherwise.

I hsve had both types of aces, and they both looked the same on my score card..

First, your question is evil @billchao!

I’d take #2 because it would be a funnier story.

Depends on the circumstances. ..

It would be No. 1 in just about all cases except where something was on the line. ... I guess that betrays that I don't know who my "best golf buddies" are, but if it meant a result, I'd take no. 2.

I've had 3 aces.  Each was in a different circumstance, each was a good shot, but not one was playing with my normal group of friends on a mid-season day, so none were celebrated in quite the way I prefer.  So I'd take #2, an ace while playing with my buddies, no matter how good or bad the shot was, I'd like to have that really big celebration.

I’d probably take #2, because I would much rather have my buddies witness a hole in one , regardless of how it happened. It’s still a hole in one. I’ve heard a quote before, I think from Seve Ballesteros, “Golf is not how, but how many.”

    • No, not that Minnie Driver. This one: It's a mini driver from Titleist, available for Tour validation/testing starting this week at Kapalua. It's available in righty and lefty and is only in 13° models for now. GT280 is a direct result of Titleist’s collaboration with PGA TOUR players on the development and testing of the TSR 2W prototype, which debuted on TOUR at last year’s PLAYERS Championship. With many players seeking an additional option at the top end of their setup, Titleist tour reps and R&D engineers worked with players such as Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris to dial in a 13-degree head that worked as a go-to club off the tee and off the deck. Now on Tour: New Titleist GT280 The arrival of the 2025 PGA TOUR season this week in Maui brings with it an addition to Titleist’s breakthrough line of GT metalwoods: the new Titleist GT280.
