Would You Rather…?

No, it's answering the question. Practice on the course, the way I practice, is less valuable than time on the range. So I made the best of it while staying within your rules. You didn't say six tournament rounds per week or anything like that.

Fair enough

You know, immediately after I posted my previous post I started thinking I may have gotten it wrong, primarily because of the O-Value. I'll revisit that in a bit, though… Not that much lower.

Definitely hole out from the fairway twice a year for the rest of my life. An eagle on a par four is -2. A hole in one is -2. Two awesome shots/year would be something to look forward to forever.😃

I’ve done both in a day....but they sold nachos at the Putt-Putt so that helped.

Would you rather #8:
Assuming you had unlimited time each day.

Would you rather play 18 holes of golf 6 days per week but only go practice golf once per week?
Or, would you rather practice golf 6 days per week and only play 18 holes once per week?

I'd prefer to play.  I enjoy my practice, but if I have the time, I'll play.

There was a time when I would rather practice than play, but today my game is going to benefit more from playing than practicing, i.e. learn how to handle certain lies, etc.  Besides, about half of my rounds are solo anyways so those really have become my practice sessions.

I’d actually think I would prefer to practice 6 days a week and play the other day. My game would benefit from it more, my wallet would benefit from that vs playing 6 days a week, and it would give me more time to do other things.

I'd much rather play 6 days a week. I practice a fair amount on the course anyways, so this would just mean more time playing golf, which would be great.

Would rather play 6 days a week - although my caveat would be that I don't think my body would appreciate playing/practicing 7 days a week. At some point my knees, back, elbow would want a day off .... but I'd be willing to give it a try, though the weather might have something to say about it.

I'd much rather play the 18 holes of golf 6 days per week and practice once per week.   There are times when I'm by myself I do practice on the course.

I have an assistant pro friend with a +2.5.  He's also a teaching pro.  He recommends his students practice what he taught them.  But this guy NEVER practices... and I kid him about it because I practice a lot.  He says he can practice everything he needs on the course.  I kinda like that approach.  So I'll go with playing 6 days a week instead of my usual 3 days of playing and 4 days of practice.  I assume ChetLovesMer is picking up the tab on this...

I'm going to construe this as limiting what I think the author intended: meaning, PLAY v. PRACTICE.  None of this practicing on the golf course business some are trying to sneak by with.  I know the facts don't say tournament play, but I'm going to construe it as tournament play/important matches/etc. v. practice time.  Otherwise, methinks that's cheating the scenario a bit, but I don't blame you--I would do the same.

As such, I'm going to take practice.  Playing golf that much would be fun for a while but then it would become far too unwieldy and could lead to burn out.  While you can certainly learn a lot on the course, I fear that playing that much and having such little time to work on things would lead to bad habits and no growth.

Practicing 6 days a week, on the other hand, would be very beneficial.  You could separate your practice time out in blocks, do mixed/random practice, practice/play on a simulator, and really own your swing.  I think that would lead to more anticipation and excitement for when you get to play that once per week.

You do you, but don't be surprised when others react like @70sSanO did earlier.

I answered the question as written. If I am on the course hitting balls I'm "playing." I'm also practicing. Hell, a "practice round" at a PGA Tour event is still "playing" too.

I know, I said I would do the same.  I just felt that the author had other intentions, and to me, they were clear; but, I get the "loop hole" attempt ya'll went for!

That's the logic my wife uses.   A clear mind reader or intentional  "Let me change your mind to my way of thinking".

Given just this choice, I would play. But I think most of us would have a different ratio.

Would I HAVE to practice once a week?  I really don’t want to increase my practice time that dramatically!   :-D

Play.  Always.

    • Day 36 (01 Aug 21) - More work on swing tempo focusing on getting a consistent 3:1 tempo.
    • The above is the first I've heard of booster shots.  Hopefully I find a place to get one that doesn't involve over a half hour's drive to a city named Corona like my first two shots.
    • and, quoting the above: The line of best fit for the data of GIR vs score is 95 - 2 * GIR.  That's probably where @reidsou's number came from.   Note that, even if we treat it as the standard goal (I agree with you, as you'll see in a moment), an average 11-GIR round probably has one or two birdies thrown in, and I'd bet that most of those missed greens in such a round (again, for an average 11-GIR round) are probably very much near-GIR.  That having been said, there are some of us, such as the original poster on this thread and I, whose long game is such that more than seven GIR isn't unheard of (which that formula would "predict," if we use it to predict at least, a round in the 70s) but who still score in the 80s.  I even recently had a round with 9 GIR and a score of 90 -- which is why 95 - 2 *GIR isn't meant to predict any individual's score, but does still highlight the importance of GIR and ball striking. Which brings me to my next point, which is also @Shorty's next point:  yeah, 50% chipping and putting is not the way to go, certainly not long term.  Maybe with the goal of getting those traits to about an average 20-handicapper's level (without sacrificing approach shot strength), and then using the 15/20 time productively in future weeks to improve on them.  The nice thing about chipping and putting is that there is some low hanging fruit as far as getting competent goes, especially if one is building off the sort of short game shots that come from missing fewer than half of one's GIRs.
    • The people I noticed who got vaxxed early, some of it was they knew an inside person, other than knowing exactly which sites to hit and when. Like people who were fully vaxxed by February/March.
    • I flew over Cabot Cliffs and Southport and the rendering of these courses was really poor. Guessing you have to find the courses where specific work was done to make them look realistic.
