Would You Rather…?

Inspired by both this topic and a golf.com podcast, let's play a little game.

The Rules of "Would You Rather" (WYR) are simple:

I'll give everyone here a choice between two (or, rarely, three) things. Each reply should quote the statement and reply with their choice and a brief explanation of why they chose that option.

The additional Rules are simple:

  1. After a minimum of three replies and eighteen hours of no new responses, anyone can switch the topic by offering a new WYR.
  2. Replying to the previous WYR then ceases, and all responses must be of the new WYR.
  3. The choices can involve anything in the golf world, but ideally will be creative and really make people think.
  4. Number each WYR sequentially, and post them in large, bold, red text so that they stand out.
  5. You cannot say "neither" or "both" or anything - you must pick one of the choices; no fence-sitting is allowed.
  6. As long as the topic is still “alive” and you have already posted your answer, you can engage in discussing the posts/choices/current WYR with others.

Try to provide interesting choices.

Here's the first Would You Rather…?

Would You Rather… #1: Hole out from the fairway twice per year (for eagle) for the rest of your life, but never get a hole in one, or get a hole in one on the par three of your choice within the next year, but never make another eagle again?

Definitely hole out from the fairway twice a year for the rest of my life. An eagle on a par four is -2. A hole in one is -2. Two awesome shots/year would be something to look forward to forever.😃

Hole out for eagle 2x a year for the rest of my life is my vote, those would help my scores more than a single hole in one would, and at the end of the day I care about my overall score for each round more than if I get a hole in one or not.

For me, this is a no-brainer.  Give me the 2 eagles per year for the rest of my life.     It would just lead to lower scores.

I’d go with the eagles the way the choice is written. It doesn’t say ‘never get more eagles’ than those two.

I will take the hole in one. After over 20 years of golf I’ve had loads of eagles, (3 i can remember on par 4’s) mainly from hitting par 5’s in two but I have yet to get an ace. It would be a tremendous disappointment to me if I never get one.

I'll take the eagles. I would enjoy making eagle twice a year much more than making only one ace for the rest of my life.

I would take the eagle twice per year for the rest of my life.

I'd happily take the eagles for life.  I've already had 3 aces, and they're great, but I'd rather have a gift that keeps coming.

Since I already have a hole-in-one, just one mind you, I am no longer waiting for that elusive feat. If they come fine; if not, that's ok too, as I already have experienced the feeling. So sign me up for the twice yearly hole out eagle from the fairway!

Would You Rather… #2: Assuming your ball is around 1-2 yards from the green, on fairway length grass, but not the super-smooth cut that some high-end courses use near the greens.  Would you rather chip (with a wedge or short iron), putt (with a putter), or something else (e.g. hybrid or fairway wood with putting motion)?

Personally, I'd rather chip and I do so with typically anything longer than a couple of feet of fringe when it's not real smooth. They are a few times when I may regret my decision afterwards, but usually I am better off: I just never felt comfortable putting when the ball will bubble onto the green...

It becomes more of a conundrum when the ball is in a collection area below the green with a short flag, i.e. not much room between the edge of the green and the hole. Miss the chip and it rolls back to your feet, miss the putt (hitting it too hard) and the ball ends up a long way from the hole...

Chip, every time.  I am terrible at judging how much the fringe is going to take off my speed, whereas I can judge the speed of the chip basically as if I was putting from the same distance.

Not enough information to decide.  3’ can be very different than 6’.  The actual lie and grain orientation of the grass is important.  As is the distance to the hole and the contour of the green between me and the hole.

Well sorry but not a big fan of this one. Too many ‘it depends.’ How much green do I have to work with? Is it downhill or uphill? Downhill I’m using putter. A lot of green and uphill I’m chipping. But generally I use putter anytime I can.

Question. How does sjduffers get to change the topic since he has only 2 replies?

To reply to the original question, I'd go for the hole outs on the second shot on a par 4. Those are off the ground, and would be more difficult. I've been really close on any number of par 3's, but never knocked one in. I've knocked a couple in for eagle on par 4's!

  1. After a minimum of three replies and eighteen hours of no new responses, anyone can switch the topic by offering a new WYR.
  2. Replying to the previous WYR then ceases, and all responses must be of the new WYR.

Because 18 hours had passed with no additional responses to the first question. It was the first rule listed for this thread.

You going back and answering the first question again will only add to the confusion and breaks the second rule of this thread

My short game is one of my nemesis.   I'll putt every time.

Not enough information. Where is the hole cut? What kind of slope am I dealing with?

I've hit all sorts of different shots from 1-2 yards off the green, including putting from the rough.
