My biggest problem is the tendency to snatch the club back on my takeaway. When I make a smooth slow back swing good things usually happen. However it seems that when faced with a forced carry over water etc., I jerk the club back too quickly causing all sorts of problems. Do any of you have a suggestion or a drill to help me correct this issue?

Short of just making yourself and practicing a slower backswing?

In jest... swimming pool, deep end, hold breath, take backswing.  I think Erik's comment is spot on... just think "slower takeaway".  Or, imagine being in that pool.


Have you tried making 50% speed swings to practice?

OR

Create "pressure" or stress in practice so it is more "normal"

Could try thinking about bringing the club back low, wide, and straight back in the first foot of backswing. Rushed swings start from initiation. so fix the initiation.

Of course, aren't we all looking for a miracle cure? Just kidding. I was wondering if practicing with a weighted club might help. Another tip I've heard is saying "Ern---ie Els" during your swing.

Try giving yourself a two word saying and mentally use it at your chosen speed for your up, and down swing speeds.  

Mine is "dollar bills" which I borrowed from the movie "Tin Cup". "Dollar" on the back swing, and "bills" on the down swing. Mentally thinking these two words during my swing helps me with my swing tempo, and timing.

This is a good drill.  I have also seen it with the  2nd ball closer to the back of the club head at address.  I have used it and found it to work well.

Nice video. I too concentrate or think about dragging the club head over the grass, or brush the grass on my take away. When practicing on a mat I want to hear the club head slide across the mat for two inches or so, it helps me slow the backswing down.
