Iced water in my Yeti 32oz bottle. I refill it at the water stations on the course, if needed: the ice usually lasts until the end, so the water is always cold. In the summer, I can be downing 3 or more of those. On those days I occasionally add a Sprite bottle as well.

I've tried a bunch of things and only hydration and electrolytes work and even then, I can get night cramps. Even swimming, I get foot cramps. I've had the issue since I was a child and you know I am no spring chicken anymore!

You have probably already tried - but, just in case...…

Quinine (used to be used for malaria) can be used for leg cramps.  Several products with it out there.

I use 500mg of magnesium tablets in the evening right before bed.  Works about 90% of the time for me...…..

Water. Nothing else is required in 99% of conditions.

If you are going to drink Gatorade or "sports drinks" you may as well drink coke.

A round of golf is not strenuous exercise or a "workout".

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) concludes that sports drinks can be helpful for intense exercise that lasts more than an hour. ...

I drink extra water the night before, and take a potassium pill in AM. If it's a two-day tournament, I drink no alcohol between rounds.

On course, I start off with water from my blue reusable bottle. On the back, I drink some GatorAde or PowerAde, and eat a Cliff bar at the turn. Without the sports drink, I risk getting crampy in legs and forearms.

Don't tell me to eat bananas, they give me an upset stomach.

And, your framing of golf as not strenuous exercise is highly misleading. It may not be as strenuous as weightlifting, but it is sustained exercise over several hours. I work with a marathon runner, and he says athletes need electrolyte replenishment for sustained exercise over two hours, as sustained water-only flushes electrolytes from system and can lead to cramps.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I get my quinine from a daily gin & tonic, or two.  No wonder I rarely have leg cramps.

I learned playing college golf that I couldn't, on my free food account during the season, that I could not have a big medium rare steak, baked potato, blue cheese drizzled salad and iced tea before a match.  I would show up on the first tee like a lazy cat ready for a nap.  The golf swing is a semi-violent movement (1.5 seconds of pure athleticism)... the rest of your body needs to be in keeping with that.  Lean and mean.

Oh come off it. You're going for a walk over 4 and a half hours. And a lot of peiople on this forum ride in carts every round. I'll be playing in 40 degree C plus tomorrow and I have to drink A LOT OF extra water. That's it. You've literally drunk the Kool Aid of the manufacturers of "sports" drinks.

Kool aid doesn’t have electrolytes. 😜

electrolytes are recommended for older people who may need to retain hydration.

I was being sarcastic. Electrolytes are very important regardless of what he stated. A woman marathoner died several years ago at the Boston Marathon because she hydrated before the race with only water and drank only water in the race. She essentially diluted her blood of electrolytes.

If you sweat a lot in a round, you need to replace the electrolytes. It may only take one bottle worth or with food, but you still need to replace it.

Is there a way to do this without getting sugary drinks?  serious question.

On a low-carb diet, your electrolyte needs go up and that's doubly true if you exercise or get ill. Here's how to make a sports drink without the sugar.

It turns out that 2 tablespoons of lemon juice contain almost exactly the amount of potassium in 8 ounces of a typical sports drink. A pinch of salt supplies 110 milligrams of sodium, the same amount in 8 ounces of a sports drink. So, if you want to make your own low-carb sports drink, it's quite easy.

However, if you've ever walked down the sports drinks aisle at the drugstore, you know there's a lot of sugar and other junk added to these items. There is a scientific reason behind why many of these drinks contain sugar; a quick shot of sugar provides helpful glucose for replenishing energy stores. Sugar is for taste, but also for fuel. People whose bodies are used to using carbohydrate for energy often find it is helpful to have extra sugar during heavy exercise. But low-carb dieters generally need to avoid this added sugar.

lefty,

Are you trying to convince me or yourself? I have a slight potassium deficiency, and without some sports drink at the turn, I tend to get crampy on the back nine. I draw upon 50 years of golfing and caddying for my statement. (After a multi-decade layoff from caddying, I caddied at a hot summer LPGA tournament in 2017).

If you want water only, go for it. Just stay out of my way when I snag a bottle of PowerAde from the passing beverage cart.

OK, So you're playing a very physical game on a hot day,  If your electrolytes get too low, you will know it! Ask me how I know!

They are recommended for anyone who sweats excessively, for whatever reason! That's why we were fed "salt gels" at the steel mill! We sweated profusely! They realized that we needed some help, But the science wasn't very well advanced in the early to mid 1970's!

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
