My Swing (Jon Cov)

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I'm struggling a bit with just brushing the ground slightly before the ball with the driver.  I don't hit the ball far, probably only averaging 190-200 off the tee which most friends can't understand as they say my swing looks great.

I've taken regular lessons over the last few years and at 1 point last year I upped to distance to an average of 230 which I'd be over the moon with now.  This cam from the instructor getting me to really fold my left knee in then try and kick it out at the top of the backswing.  I've gone back to this and the distance is still 190-200 but generally straight, htting maybe 70+% of fairways.  I was out with my dad yesterday and mid way through the round he said the 2 best drives I had hit, I rolled my left foot keeping the heel on the ground; I was never really conscious of lifting my left heel (I did deliberately try this a few times previously)  It made sense and felt more comfortable and did hit a couple of better and longer drives the last couple of holes and the irons were definitely better straight away.

A bit side tracked maybe but every practice swing with the driver I still brush the ground slightly and more often than not, maybe 90% of the time will catch the ground forst when teeing up properly so just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can stop this and maybe get that extra 20 or 30 yards.....

Thanks.

I've been Playing Golf for: 15 years
My current handicap index or average score is: 14.2
My typical ball flight is: straight high, sometimes slight fade or draw
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Catching the ground first with the driver

You could be leaning target-ward on the backswing, and reversing on the downswing, shifting your weight back so you bottom out early.

You could be standing too close to the ball, or have the weight too far in your heels at setup.

You could be doing a number of things. Better (and slow motion if possible) video would be helpful. More video.

Unfortunately it's my dad taking the video so a better quality one is an almost impossible task.

That would be my bad swing when I don't get the weight onto my front foot at the start of the downswing which I always try to do as I know that's been a huge problem of mine.

My dad also noticed yesterday mid way through the round that the two best drives I'd had I rolled my left foot in with the heel still on the ground.  Most of the other times the left heel was coming up and not always coming back down on the dowswing, certainly at the start which kind of goes with me not getting the weight back accross to the left side.

Tripod? Can get one for like $10 on amazon. Most modern smartphones have the ability to record in slow motion too.

    • This comment makes me think of Mid South #2. 😉 I assume you remember driving the green in fourball at 2017 Newport Cup.  Pretty sure that was a longer carry than this one lol.
    • Just got home from Wisconsin.   Again, thank you @cipher and @iacas for setting this up and running this trip. I had a fantastic time and it was great to see most of you again and to meet some of you for the first time. The courses were amazing, and we could not have ask for better weather. The most rain we got was a few sprinkles today for like 3 minutes.
    • Yes I know. We’re celebrating it.
    • Did you end up checking it out?
    • You know some people pay good money to be spectators at events like these. 😂. I have a friend who thinks I'm a slow player because I always get to the course after him, take two practice swings as part of my preshot routine, and use Aimpoint when putting what's m whereas he just hits and takes a look at his putt for a second or two before putting.  I don't think I'm a slow player but maybe i am 🤷‍♀️. That said, generally speaking, i don't have a family or anything i have a specific time that i have to get back for so a 4-4 5 hour round doesn't bother me as long as we're not stop, go, stop, go, stop, go.  If it feels like we're in rhythm then i generally won't be bothered bc the round won't feel like it takes a while.  I guess playing at public courses generally on weekends when you know it's going to be filled with ppl just makes me expect that a round won't be less than 4 hours.
