John, when is there "free relief" from loose impediments?

That's scummy, and I'd call you out on that if you're doing that regularly.

See 15.1a Exception 1:

Exception 1 – Removing Loose Impediment Where Ball Must Be Replaced: Before replacing a ball that was lifted or moved from anywhere except the putting green:

  • A player must not deliberately remove a loose impediment that, if moved when the ball was at rest, would have been likely to have caused the ball to move.

  • If the player does so, he or she gets one penalty stroke, but the removed loose impediment does not need to be replaced.

This exception applies both during a round and while play is stopped under Rule 5.7a. It does not apply to a loose impediment that is removed as a result of marking the spot of a ball, or lifting, moving or replacing a ball or causing a ball to move.

P.S. To iterate upon the "announce my intention to identify a ball," the rule says "If a ball might be a player’s ball but cannot be identified as it lies:". That's why it's scummy - it's scummy to put your hands on your ball under the false pretense that it's to identify it.

Another Question. When I need to move a loose impediment?
I will usually announce my intention to Identify my ball and mark it.

The other exception to the rule: Preferred lies. Some areas have extended PL seasons. Check your calendar. As soon as the course changes to "summer rules" you're out of luck.

Make sure, @fredf, when you try to tag someone that you actually do it. @Club Rat - you have to choose their name from the small popup. https://thesandtrap.com/how-to/mention-members

Yes, I tried that and when that black box with the name inside came up I couldn't get my cursor to reappear in the writing area - it was all frozen. And then I repeated it and had the same experience, so I'm not sure what I was doing wrong. Perhaps if I write the message first and then go back to the top and put the @name in?

Dunno, @fredf, works for everyone else. You may have just had to click the name. On a computer I can use the arrow keys and the return key. On a phone, my finger, of course.

    • That's perhaps the worst way to think about it. They test a ton of golf balls, too. Just because they don't design golf balls doesn't mean they don't understand how they work, what balls behave under what conditions, etc. given all that they have to do with their testing robots to make sure their equipment performs across a variety of golf balls and types of balls. They're unbiased about golf balls while being completely thorough in testing and analyzing them.
    • Day 88 (23 Sep 21) - Rained most of the day, but cleared out late in the day so I could get outside and make some swings.  Went with the 7i and whiffle balls, focusing on staying focused on getting the weight on the lead foot going into the downswing.
    • As the post before yours says… 😉
