I still disagree with this.

It's not really an opinion Bill.

Not bollocks.

This is really the only point we're arguing and I wholeheartedly disagree.

Again, not really an opinion.

That's a lot more stress on my shoulder than a golf bag and if were an awkward position, you'd think I'd hurt my shoulder a lot more.

And yet some golfers never have back injuries, and others do. Some carpet installers get really bad knees, others don't.

For all the times you want to talk about experience and "anecdata" in other topics, you're saying this here now?

It's well within a perfectly natural range of motion for the shoulder.

So is throwing a baseball. Then why do all those MLB pitchers keep having injuries and surgeries?

10 minutes ago, billchao said:

"Leading to an increased chance of injury" can be interpreted as, "oh I better not do this because I'll hurt myself."

Nobody here is doing that, except you arguing against what you think other people might take it as.

I'm out.

With all the shit I have in my bag, I never carry it, push cart all the way. The only time I carry is when I play left-handed. 😂

I see all the stuff about back/shoulder, but the reason I switched to push (over pull) was my wrists. I don't understand how you can put all that pressure on your wrists, over and over, and not feel it. Two wheelers are almost as bad as carrying.

I have always walked and carried.  I recognize that a good push cart requires less energy than carrying in almost all cases.  For me it is just habit though I was thinking about push carts recently as I am not getting any younger.

Carrying a bag does allow one to take a few short cuts.  It also feels easier when going up hill, perhaps because the push cart requires one to engage the arms and upper back.   And let's face it, carrying the bag looks cooler and more macho!  😉

Shouldn't the thread title be "Carry, Push or Caddie"?  Did Mary Queen of Scots have a caddie?

Yes, he was beheaded when she was for carrying one extra niblick.

So apparently I do pull my cart with my arm to my side. Guess that makes my argument about my shoulder moot, because I’m not pulling with my arm behind me at all.

Thats what I get for commenting on what I think I do rather than what I actually do 🤦🏻

I don’t know about this one, though. I mean almost any pulling exercise you do is going to put more stress on your wrists than pulling a cart. I guarantee you can deadlift a lot more weight than the force your cart puts on your hands. Or doing pull-ups. Or simply hanging from a bar.

And a pull cart wobbles. You look like a duck from behind.

Push cart for me. My bag weighs well over 30lbs.

No need to put my back, and shoulders in harm's way hauling that weight around.

I do have a smaller bag with fewer clubs, and gear I will carry sometimes.  Not very often though.

A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

No, not by a long shot. Pulling > carrying.

Like I said with all the shit in my bag I never carry it. I usually have 2 or 3 bottles of Gatorade a couple ice packs, a lunch, sometimes a couple beers. Pull carts don’t do justice.

It's not that you're pulling. It's that you're pulling a pull cart...

Just messing with you.

  • 2 weeks later...

I voted its easier to push although personally I carry.

I carry simply to burn more calories and help get my heart rate up for general cardio vascular health. I guess a lot of reason why I golf these days is just for the exercise.

I understand it can be an unhealthy practice (like how it can impact your back/shoulders). But my doctor and physical therapists have said that if I always use two straps and watch my posture (which I admit, gets annoyingly tiring), its a good way to get in more strenous exercise during a round of golf.

100% sure i play worse golf though. When i do ride, i can hit the ball further and straighter. So if i really want to score well, i push or ride.

Last few rounds I have to carrying. The main reason is the courses have been so damn filthy due to rain. It first started with a round that took me 10 minutes after the round to hose my cart off before loading into car. I have been really enjoying the walk the last few. I have a SunMountain 2.5 bag and only use 11 to 9 clubs including putter on those walks. Full transparency my buddy rides so i put a few items in his cart to really lighten the load. Last round i had 4 balls in total. 2 in pocket 2 in bag nothing else in my bag but clubs. So much fun and quick to load into car at end of round.

To add more to this new found love for the walk and carry. The shoes. I have been wearing the Ripstops and last 2 rounds the Lux Sport. They are exceptionally easy to walk a course in.

I find it much easier to carry, a lot more freedom when not having wheels on the ground.  I do pack lighter when carrying as well.  However, I do only carry when it’s not too hot or sunny out.  Once it gets really sunny and the dry heat kicks in, I’ll push the cart to stay under the umbrella’s shade and load up with water.  When it pushes mid-90s and over, I’ll just ride.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
