Hmmm, maybe I'll get ESPN+

TPC Harding Park had to wait an extra three months for the 102nd PGA Championship but that wait is almost over as golf’s first major of 2020...

I must say I think I’m looking forward to this PGA CHAMPIONSHIP more than any since the break out of the long haired bright blonde kid...Daly.

DeChambeau has an Instagram tracker account. At first, I saw it abbreviated, bryson_dechambeautra, so I thought it was named in jest, like a monster name, lol.

‘Since it will be mid 50’s Temperature wise in San Fransico he will have a huge advantage when it comes to driving the ball.’

Lol. Nonsense.

Lol. Nonsense.

Care to elaborate? He has some of the most optimal numbers for LD, and the lack of spin will really help when the air is more dense. Huge may be an overstatement, but good launches in the cold will out perform spinny drives more so than they do when the air is less dense.

Not may, is. Vastly overstated. Come on..there’s been studies done on this..even when they tested a frozen ball vs a normal temp ball the differences were minimal. And as far as air density....it’s fun and entertaining to think there’s a difference. Scientifically negligent at best. BD already has an advantage with distance right now..playing in 50* weather contributes .001% of that. You can believe it’s a huge advantage, I get it ..it’s fun..but truthfully? Nonsense.

Do you know what the Magnus effect is and how air density effects it? Air density effects this as well as how long the ball stays fast. As air density increases the Magnus effect is amplified as a percentage, so someone that hits their drive with 2700-3200 spin will get a ball flight with a larger increase in Magnus effect than someone that hits the ball with 1800-2000 spin. It isn't about the temperature of the ball (it plays a small effect), it IS about air density. If you don't think there is a difference then why does Coors Field have so many home runs every year in comparison with other ballparks? Gravity?

Are you suggesting that temperature affects density as much as a mile of elevation?

Interesting to see John Daly withdrawing and allowing some alternate the chance to play.  This is exactly what happened for him many years ago when he won the PGA.

Love that Twain quote!  I spent 2 days in San Francisco one late Spring and froze to death with the wind chill and low temperatures.  Then I flew to Hawaii.  Need I say more?

When I was seven, we went to a convention in San Francisco in September of 1979.  It was during an epic heatwave, but luckily we were going to Hawaii the week after, so we had clothes that we were able to wear, and then wash them all at my aunt's house before flying to Honolulu.

It depends on how much temperature change. I'm suggesting that air density is important, and even more acutely in golf than in baseball, because spin plays a larger role in golf ball flight than baseball flights.

Use the online air density calculator to find out the density of air at any given temperature and pressure.

This is kind of nice. 0.071 pounds per yard in San Francisco right now (obviously not the heat of the day, but a reference). It was 0.062 in Memphis on Sunday. About a 13 percent difference. Coors Field is usually around an 18% difference to sea level when it comes to air density.

San Fran is also known for fog and humid air, which is less dense than dry air. But all the players are seeing he same conditions, so the distance advantage is always relative. BD will be longer regardless of weather factors. He doesn’t get a personal advantage.

San Francisco is at sea level, almost, too. Altitude generally matters more than temperature, within the normal range in which major professional golf is played, especially as a golf ball doesn't heat up or cool down much.

That’s not what a I said. These weather conditions do not play a huge advantage for BD. Period. He already has an advantage with his distance right? Well the effect you’re toting as so significant affects all the players. So...huge advantage from the air density effect? Nope.
