If only he could have gotten his ball speed up to 208 mph he would have won.

I never watched Big Break, so Tony came on my screen when he turned his ankle 90 degrees at the ANGC par three tournament and then made a strong showing at the Masters.  I liked him for that, and I liked listening to him talk, so I started rooting for him.  But I am starting to seriously question his judgement.  His game has some holes in it, but he seems to have become fixated by this ballspeed nonsense.  I hope he pulls his head out and start focusing on things that would help him win.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Can't say Finau gagged today 68...but he needed to go low to win. I like Tony...seems like a nice guy...oh well....seems like he has a great life and family....can anyone ask for more?...I think not.

I always like and appreciate when a winner sinks a longish putt on the 72nd hole...even though they need not to for the win....congrats to Thompson.

I always thought at the beginning that Amanda B might have been a bit of a bimbo...BUT....I don't anymore...I like her and she does a GREAT job....now we need to get Hooker Holly back on TV for golf...just sayin.😁

Twin Cities TPC seems like a boring course...but I am biased for parkland tree lined courses.

I don’t think his pursuit of ball speed was/is his problem. I think he just struggles when the heat is on. He jacked that 3’ putt for par. Can’t do that when you’re chasing the leader on Sunday. I haven’t seen his stats for this tournament. Was he losing strokes to the field on tee shots?

Tough to defend him at the moment, but I'm not sure I agree with the bolded portion. The nowhere-near-parallel swing he actually brings to the course would indicate that he hasn't been chasing ball speed.

If you want to make the argument that he should be spending more time practicing putting, sure, I guess, but we don't exactly know the guy's practice schedule.

That is a nice looking loaf! I like Finau as well, but he can’t seem to close.

Clearly the course had the potential to go low, and clearly TF didn't rise to the occasion...again. I said early in the day that there would be low scores and he wouldn't be able to keep up. That was the case once again. I don't remember what hole it was, but that 2-4 footer that he missed (couldn't tell cause of angle) didn't even sniff the cup. Those putts are required makes unless you have a monster lead, and even then, you want to make them for confidence anyway.

Oh, come on. We all know that distance is a lethal tool. Everyone wants to shame a player for going after it when we know it is an amazing asset to have when you are trying to be at the top of the game. I agree that it isn't where he struggles and is fairly long as is, but...

It is where his head is at.  He not only talked about it incessantly during the charity skins game the Wednesday of Jack's tournament, he has brought it up in more than one interview - all seemingly motivated by a desire to emulate and surpass Brysom Dechambeau.  It just does not reflect a winning attitude.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Tough luck for Tony. He seems to be a real nice guy who needs to start winning a few to shake off his growing reputation. Few people remember that Nick Faldo was called "El Foldo" by the press for years  before he started winning championships. Tom Watson lost a few in his early years as well. Hopefully, Tony's time will come soon.

But he had numerous wins on the Euro circuit before the age of 30. Tony will probably win 1 or 2 more times in his career unless he makes a major breakthrough. I guess the only hope is that he makes something like the career of Couples. He had only won 3 times by the time he hit 30, but then went on a hot streak in his early 30s, cooling off before lots of success on the Champions tour.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
