I never said I wanted to drop nearer the hole or ever have done so, I said what does it really matter? It’s just a stupid game, not life and death, I know for some of you who don’t have a life it may be life and death, but the rules are completely arbitrary, mere human tradition, they did NOT come down the mountain with the Ten Commandments!

If you were better informed, you might understand that the rules are NOT completely arbitrary, but come from a small number of basic principles.  There's no question that rules have to draw lines, and the choice of exactly where to draw those lines has to be somewhat arbitrary, but that doesn't mean that there's not underlying logic.

It is a game, and probably just as stupid as any other game.  Yet if we are going to compete against one another, we need to have rules to keep the competition reasonably fair.

Earlier, I pointed you to a link where you can learn about the principles that govern the rules of golf.  It’s obvious that you’re not interested enough to take advantage of that little pearl.

I sent that to him as well. He doesn’t care. Trolls usually don’t.

your binary does not work

Just because you think it's a stupid game doesn't mean it's life and death for everyone else. There is a huge range between were a lot of people exist. It's not a good excuse for your ramblings.

Also, you can not have a game with out rules. So, if you want to go out there an hit a ball around and not follow the rules of golf, guess what you are not playing golf. Also, golf has the most fair rules of any professional sport and many other non professional sports. Just because you hate them, doesn't really mean anything.

Also, if it is just a game, why do you even post about it? My only guess is you are trolling. If not, then you care more for the game of golf than you would like to admit.

I love to play and to talk about it!

i never said the rules are unfair or wrong or bad, I just don’t understand them and nobody else does either?

my question was not about moving the ball but does it really matter?
if I’m 100 yards out and I drop a little nearer the whole is really a big deal? Does it really matter? Am I gonna make eagle or is lighting gonna strike?

i dont think so!

i play by the rules but they don’t make any logical sense!

the USGA seems to me only to exist to take all the fun out of golf!

It’s never said it’s right or wrong it is what it is!

Does a tennis ball that land half inch outside the court out or in? Does half an inch make any difference on the ball route that much or does it really matter?

By your thought process it wouldn't. It's only half an inch. No idea why they have so many referees squinting their eyes to spot the difference. Yes?

You've been pointed to "The Principles Behind the Rules of Golf" twice now, by @boogielicious and @David in FL. I don't agree at all with your stance on the rules, but to further inform myself I recently purchased this book for $1.50 (to be fair, shipping was like $8-9 or something) from USGA publications. It goes into quite a bit of detail in explaining the logic that you claim is missing from the rules. Why don't you purchase a copy for yourself, read it, and see if you still feel the same way.

I'm about half way through it, and have found it really interesting. At the same time, it is also great material to fall asleep to.

I understand the rules. They are really easy to understand.

i dont think so!

That isn't the point. There has to be a hardline somewhere. The hardline for golf is, you don't get to drop nearer to the hole. No one is going to measure your distance down to the inch and complain about it. If you happen to drop a few yards closer, that could matter. What if that position means your stance is on a less extreme lie?

It's not about nitpicking. It's about common sense. Don't drop closer to the hole. It's easy to remember, and it makes sense. Your ball, where it originally came to rest is as far as the ball progressed towards the hole. Why should you get to drop it closer?

Then don't play. They produced simple and fair rules to an extremely fun game.

Where does it say the purpose of this forum is to persecute anyone you don’t like or don’t agree with!

tennis is very different! As you say there’s referee’s and direct competition not in golf some courses have marshals but they are never around, ive never seen one, golf is an individual sport! I play my best when I’m alone, it’s like fishing with your brother in law in the boat, you can’t really focus on what’s your doing!

One purpose of this forum is to share the knowledge each of us has, so that others may learn.  A number of us have suggested a small inexpensive book that YOU can buy and read if you care to learn anything about the rules and the logic that ties them together.  You have repeatedly ignored those posts, so you're apparently happier to remain ignorant of that logic.

One of the fabulous aspects of golf is that you can play alone.  When you play alone you can pretty much do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hinder other people on the course or damage the property.

Out by yourself? Take that casual drop, tee one up in the middle of the fairway, hit two balls per shot and use the best one.

Rules govern competitions. If it isn't a competition, the rules don't matter. So don't worry about them.

I am so sorry. I will stop persecuting you. Please tell us more about your experiences and frustrations with the rules. I will try to be more sympathetic and agree with you.

All rules do is ruin scores. We are supposed to play for fun. Where's the fun in that right? I work all week like a dog, wife keeps bugging me about doing not doing laundry or dishes (even though she never cooks and only wears new clothes!!!), kids want a new Xbox every month (actually I think PS4 is better, but they don't lissen), and now I get a penalty for touching the sand in bunker? Really?? Jeez, who made the USGA the boss of my life?

Doesn't make cents.
