See, I think posing it in the future tense is the mistake. I think he IS toast. Has been toast for 3 years now.

I can't say it any better than that. I watch golf for the golf, not the sideshow crap (especially when the sideshow crap is negative). When I see John Daly, I see the biggest waste of golf talent of this generation.

Im kind of disappointed. People seem to think John is more wrong than right. I want to tell you something--I dont see to many other tour pros giving money to charities like John does. John Daly has given a lot of money to the St. Jude charities for young kids-but that never gets put in the paper. John has done more corporate work than anyone on tour other than Tiger. So what if he drinks-thats his business-but at the end of the day its John Daly that has given the PGA Tour more corporate responsibiliy work than anyone

Oh bullcrap. It's fine that you like the guy, but stop making stuff up. "Daly has given the PGA Tour more corporate responsibility work?" What does that even mean?

And nobody's denied that John's not "a nice guy" or that some things John does aren't charitable. Yet you seem to be denying that there's a tremendous negative side to John, too. After all, "everyone loves John" (more b.s.), right? Not. Again, it's fine that you like the guy, but a lot of people don't and the more b.s. claims you make, the weaker your opinions become.

I think you may have said it better than that.

And why is nobody blaming Imada for screwing O'Hern? He is as much at fault for O'Hern's DQ as JD...

How is Imada as responsible as Daly? Furthermore, with Imada, it isn't a destructive pattern of behavior.

I dont see to many other tour pros giving money to charities like John does. John Daly has given a lot of money to the St. Jude charities for young kids-but that never gets put in the paper. Daly advertises his charitable givings more than most others. Did you notice how most of the coverage of the Palmer Hospital was on the help it gave the kids and not on Palmer?

Now, maybe if the PGA Tour could give Daly more alcohol responsibility lessons.

I see the biggest waste of golf talent of this generation.

Really?

If you were one Egg McMuffin short of 3 bills and were only 5'10"...could you have the remakable touch that he does? That's TALENT!! He's just not competitve on the tour. mainly because of... 1. Personal life, mostly self imposed 2. Putting 2a. Poor Course Management And as far as screwing over the alternates...hmmm let's see, JD is in the field and I am one of the first alternates who only lives 5 minutes away...I would be at the course with the sticks in the back of the station wagon...just in case. Again, hope he can straighten things out, it would be good to see him moderatley healthy and win a tournament or two.

You know why John can party and will party is because he has two majors. If he retired after that British Open win-then id call that a heck of a career. Most people would say 2 majors is borderline hall of fame status

r7 425,

I'm not a religious man, but I always keep in mind the saying "There, but for the grace of God, go I." I think it's too bad that a lot of people here are choosing to condemn Daly rather than feel some empathy or attempt to understand his situation.

But I don't know what's more troublesome - their lack of compassion - or your inability/refusal to see the human tragedy unfolding before your eyes.

they thought that they were supposed to be "afternoon alternates" until tuesday, alternates 1-whatever are actually in that order-if you are 3rd alternate, you might play early, where if you are 7th, you will be in the afternoon, if you even play. however, the pga has a stupid rule where after tuesday, the odd numbered (1,3,5,7, etc) alternates will play for any player who withdrawls in the morning, and the even numbered (2,4,6,8, etc.) players play in the afternoon. Ryuji was 3rd, and o'hern was 5th. daly got dq'd and the 1 alternate withdrew. the guys should still know this dumb rule, but your claim is ridiculous

r7 425,

I am not sure what is left to understand. Only John can be the one to turn it around. Once he is sick and tired of being sick and tired perhaps he will change. But until his "Awakening" happens he will continue to spiral downward. I think that one of the biggest problems with people with "Star Power" is that their lives can be often filled with enablers and yes men. Butch did the right thing by calling him on it. If more people took this approach he may well have hit bottom a long time ago.

Butch did the wrong thing. He called him out like Butch has some position of power. He practically embarrassed John by not even calling him. John read about the split in the paper. Im sorry but who the heck is Butch Harmon compared to John Daly.

Butch is someone who apparently is not going to put up with any BS. I don't know who he thinks he is but he drew a line in the sand with this one and called it like he saw it. Whether he phoned him or not I don't think the outcome would have changed. It's too bad because a lot of people were hoping that this was going to be a turning point. Well maybe it will be, not now, but down the road as another opportunity wasted.

If golf is a metaphor for life, then poor course management covers it all.

Greg Norman, in one of his books (I have it at home; I forget which one) said something about course management. He said that the way many amateurs play golf makes him wonder how they manage the rest of their lives.

And as far as screwing over the alternates...hmmm let's see, JD is in the field and I am one of the first alternates who only lives 5 minutes away...I would be at the course with the sticks in the back of the station wagon...just in case.

I agree, except the sticks would be in the courtesy car. I figure if you have anything like "alternate" attached to you and Daly's involved, show up. Maybe that'll be the new rule of wrist for these guys?

Daly embarrassed Harmon too with his antics. When the two began their partnership, Harmon expressed how serious Daly was going to be about fixing his problems. The last few weeks - not even counting what happened at the Palmer - showed that Daly cares as little as ever.

Harmon only takes serious students, Harmon Schools not withstanding.

they thought that they were supposed to be "afternoon alternates"

So they thought they had a later tee time also???

Don't have my PGA Tour manual handy right now, but yes, I look ridiculous Wasn't Daly the 9th or 11th alternate at crooked stick? JD must have wanted to play some golf, where as the 3rd and 5th alternate at Arnie's tournament felt it eaisier to blame someone else for their lack of effort in not showing up on standby.... Let's blame it on the #1 alternate!

The #1 alternate was sick. That's a real excuse, since I think he played in the tournament.

JD was the 9th alternate and drove through the night to get there and borrowed someone's caddy (person, not car) once there. It is pretty funny how many people thought their tee time was later. I seem to be the only one who keeps thinking his is earlier than it really is!

Uhm, wrong. Butch did what I wish a lot more people would do to John: call him on the carpet for his crap.
