Moving Away From the Big Brands

Has anyone migrated away from the big golf clothing brands? Not clubs but shoes or balls?

In the last few years I have found that I moved away from Adidas, Nike and FootJoy shoes and into True Linkswear.

Clothing I am now wearing mostly Linksoul and looking at other lifestyle/boutique golf clothing.

The last piece to fall is the ball, it took me a bit but I moved over to Snell(Get Sum)

was curious if anyone else made the switch and if so why?

My why is I happen to prefer the styles and fits more.  No real reason for ball just trying something different. I never really was a big brand popular ball guy to begin with.

I haven’t moved away from the big brands, but I usually buy when things go on sale. I bought some Srixon balls when they had the Fathers Day bogo sale. That made them cheaper than Snell. I am interested in True shoes, but I feel like I need a shoe that is a bit more supportive, and I just don’t like to order shoes that I can’t try on before ordering.

Bermuda Sands Golf Apparel is one to look at.  I like their golf shirts but only buy them when tgw.com had them on closeout.  I wear golf shirts for work also and then can tend to get pretty beat up on the job.  Lately I have been getting FJ shirts at our Club.  I know they are not that small boutique but they are so nice.

2nd on Snell, i like the MTB-X Yellow.  Great balls.  Tried their golf gloves and they are not bad.

Pretty much no risk

I've been using DTC balls for awhile now, and I've settled on Snell MTB-X as my favorite. In my opinion, the performance and price of Snell balls can't be beat. I don't lose that many balls anymore, but I'm not going to pay nearly $50/dozen for a premium ball from Titleist, Taylormade, Bridgestone, Callaway, etc. when I can get equivalent performance for close to half that.

I also recently started wearing True Linkswear shoes. I have two pair, and they are both very comfortable, and since they don't have screw in spikes, I can put them on at home and not have to change shoes at the course. Plus, there is no risk to try them.

I don't know if B. Draddy is considered a small brand, but I really like their shirts. My preferred golf shirt is a comfortable cotton T-shirt, but where collared shirts are required, B. Draddy shirts are about the closest thing to wearing a cotton T-shirt that I have found.

I also play Wilson irons. I don't consider Wilson a small brand given their history, but my friends are always asking why I play Wilson irons, as if they are second rate compared to the major brands.

I just bought another pair of FJ Classics, I think I paid like $75. These are probably my fourth set, I just like the look. I compared others but went with the FJs. I like to be able to change the soft cleats each year. They last a long time as well and are very comfortable.

So I would have to say no I have not moved away from the big brands.

I stick to what works for me.  Some of the newer brands just try to come up with some gimmick to appeal to a younger crowd.  An ad with 3 guys smoking cigars with their hats turned around backwards does nothing for me.  I stick to my Foot Joy sta- sof gloves, and footwear from the major footwear companies I’ve always bought from... Adidas, Nike, Puma and time a lesser degree Foot joy.

They serve me well, I have no reason to spend good money where I don’t have to.

DING!

I will say I really like the True Linkswear Shoes.

Having said that, I also find that UA and Nike shirts seem to always "feel" the best and fit me well. So, that's pretty much what I buy.

My pants and shorts are a true mixed bag. (yes, some of them are cargo shorts... as a matter of fact I'm wearing cargo shorts as I type this.)

The golf ball I play is Volvik Vivid. I've been playing it for 4 years now. (Not sure, is that a big brand or a small brand?) I like that I can see it.

Anywho, the gist of the story is if you buy something because it comes from a big brand IMO that's silly. Equally silly to NOT buy something because it comes from a big brand. I buy what fits me, what works for me and what fits in my budget. Could not care less if its from a BIG brand or a little brand.
