You're misunderstanding. This is a basic rule re: relief from a penalty area, and you get several options (outside of "play it as it lies"):

1. within two club lengths of the point of entry (red penalty area)
2. back on a line (yellow and red)
3. stroke and distance (yellow and red)

As I said in the first post, the relief area is in the general area, which includes the rough, the fairway, etc.

...so he’s in the rough hitting his 2nd shot.  He’s not in a penalty area.  He tops it into the water. It seems that he went back on a line, but how far back can he go.  It looked like it was more than 2 club lengths, or does that not apply?

He's in the penalty area (the water) when he takes his drop! He can go back as far as he wants on that line (and since 2019, up to one clublength to the side of that line).

This is a pretty basic rule that hasn't changed much (the ± one-clublength width added in 2019) for decades.

Prior to 2019 if you hit it into a water hazard (not a "lateral" water hazard, a yellow hazard), you had three options:

• play it as it lies
• replay the shot (stroke and distance)
• drop "back on a line."
• (a fourth option was available if there was a drop zone)

Those are still the same three (or four) options, except the third now includes a little wiggle room left or right of the exact line.

I apologize for the surprise here. This is a basic rule that I'd expect most 4.9 index golfers to understand. On the bright side, maybe learning some of the Rules could help you get that down to a 3.9 or something!

I didn't expect today's to be this exciting.  I'm glad I'm watching.

 

Also a moment ago I realized I hadn't had any Coke (no DJ jokes please) all week, not even while watching.  So I now have a Cherry Coke Zero to accompany me as I finish watching.

Commercial free finish is awesome, but I was hoping for some down time to step outside for Speed Sticks.  First world problem I know.

Could you imagine winning the FedEx Cup / Tournament of Champions and losing the #1 Word Ranking?

That would be terrible for the FedEx Cup imo. I don’t think FedEx would be very happy about that

No, he didn't.

He (David Eger) was credited with calling in while Tiger was still on the course, thus for the "meeting" they had while he was still playing.

I got word out immediately after (during, really) Tiger's interview, which resulted in the actual penalty.

How about DJ not winning the PGA player of the year, actually finished 5th. Interesting formula for determining the award, and DJ did have some bad weeks (missed cuts) that hurt him in this award determination). While he might not like it, I think he has 15 million reasons not to care to much.
